How well does the Epson Inkjet Printer Driver 2 (ESC/P-R), which is available in AUR, support the printer:
Epson EcoTank ET-8550?
ChatGPT says that the highest photo quality cannot be achieved with this, you have to use TurboPrint.
Do any of you know anything about this?
It works fine with the 2850. I would think if there is an issue that it would be with the larger sizes the 8550 offers, but I have no direct knowledge. It is a fine driver for smaller size papers.
From Epson’s support site searched on 8550 and linux :
Product Name | Category | Operation System | Version | Module Name | Language | Release Date | |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
ET-8550 Series | Printer Driver | Linux | 1.2.34 | Epson Inkjet Printer Driver 2 (ESC/P-R) for Linux | All language | 06-05-2025 | |
ET-8550 Series | Printer Driver | Linux | 1.2.2 | Epson Printer Utility for Linux | All language | 06-05-2025 |
Yes, the driver also works perfectly for the smaller Epson EcoTank ET-2871.
However, I would like to know whether everything is well supported with the ET-8550, as this is a larger and more expensive printer from which I hope to get first-class quality photos.
I would not believe what ChatGPT says.
Not ever!
But it depends on the kind of question you posed to it.
This driver in AUR:
https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/epson-inkjet-printer-escpr2
uses the driver distributed by Epson for this printer.
Why would the driver distributed by the manufacturer be inferior to TurboPrint?
They claim this, btw:
Is this better than what Epson itself promises?
Perhaps the 50 bucks are a good investment …
But you asked:
and to that I can only answer:
I don’t know.
Hi @Michi,
I have installed an Epson TX-4200 and every time I print a text document I have to select the photo quality manually and is a slowly process to print each page. However, with pdf files I have no problems, the program select this mode automatically and the printing process is slow.
I have no more comments about this topic.
Regards,
