Whenever I try to play Portal 2 I get the error Engine Error: Steam is not running. You must start Steam in order to play this game

Other games work fine.

I have tried reinstalling the game, reinstalling Steam, to no avail.

Before this I also had a problem with Portal 2 opening on the wrong monitor in my dual monitor setup.

Here’s the output when I run the game through terminal until the error pops up then I click “stop” in the GUI.

Update/Edit: I’ve tried restarting my computer multiple times, uninstalled and reinstalled the game, uninstalled and reinstalled Steam, moved the installation folder, deleted the compatdata folder, ran the game natively and with Proton to no avail.

Hi @n_b,

If you haven’t tried rebooting, do so. It can’t hurt.

Hope it helps!

This started last night and persists this morning (CST). See edits, I might have added things before this response.

I’ve read the newly added…things, but there is nothing about if you’ve properly restarted. Not Steam, your PC.

Why are you running the Windows version via Proton when there is a native Linux version available?

I’m using whatever is installed through pamac.

I restarted last night multiple times and turn my computer off at the end of the evening.

I don’t know how to pick which version Steam uses for Portal 2.

Right-click game → Properties… → Compatibility → turn off “Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibilty tool”.

That’s already unchecked.

Then I don’t know what’s going on because steamapps/common/Portal 2/portal2.exe is definitely a Windows executable and all the messages following that, like Loading library 'Kernel32.dll' and everything that starts with fixme:, are from Proton running that Windows executable.

Beats me, too. For some reason Wine is trying to run the game sometimes, too? I’m confused. After the Manjaro update this evening I tried running Portal 2 again to see what would happen and Wine was trying to install a .net framework for it. Any ideas there?

Okay so I set the compatibility tools to use Steam Linux Runtime and now the game runs except it opens up on the opposite monitor it’s supposed to, with a massive screen size, and the mouse cursor being read off center.

Edit: I was able to get into my last story save near the end of the game, playing the game seems fine, but navigating the menus is difficult because of the mouse not registering where it’s pointed. I have to drag the mouse to the right and beneath where I want to click.

This can be fixed by using Vulkan instead of OpenGL. Add -vulkan to Portal 2’s launch options.

Thank you! This fixed the mouse cursor problem as well.

I’m going to mark this post as a solution.

If anyone else encounters an issue like I did with the game, try this

Right click properties on Portall 2, go to Compatibility, check “Force the use of a specific Steam Play tool” and select “Steam Lilnux Runtime 1.0 (scout)”. This will get the game running.

If having mouse or dual monitor issues, add -vulkan to launch options.

Thanks @MrLavender and @Mirdarthos for your help.
