Encouraging News about the Dreaded essx8336

Instead of dummy outut, Manjaro’s latest kernel, 6.0.2-2, actually produces the essx8336 in pulseaudio’s outut devices: “Celeron/Pentium Silver Processor High Definition Audio Stereo”

The speakers of my generic 7" umpc (nameless brand) now crackle occasionally, and with a usb-adapter>headphones (which must have its own sooundcard) allows sound.

To produce sound from the speakers could be the jiggle of a command. Any ideas?

(until this kernel, the essx8336 never showed up in alsa; now essx8336 is the default)

Might look into that first.

I would suggest to either use one or another, but not both.
For pipewire install manjaro-pipewire package.
To use pulseaudio install manjaro-pulse package.

Technically there are only 1.4 sound servers because only pipewire; pipewire-media-session and alsa-card-profiles is included on Gnome & KDE ISOs Xfce full ISO does not include pipewire-media-session Xfce minimal ISO has PulseAudio only Should I leave both running on all my machines or disable one of them?

Also, do you have alsa-ucm-conf and sof-firmware installed? Even tho i think you might need the sof-firmware-git build from AUR …

Post back after removing pulseaudio and installing manjaro-pipewire.

I already had sof-firmware and alsa-ucm-conf installed.

Result is still the same: no sound from internal speakers except an occasional crackle; usb audio is fine.

I also took your advice to install sof-firmware-git in this manner (based on sof/installer at main · thesofproject/sof · GitHub ):

git clone https://github.com/thesofproject/sof
cd sof
make -C installer/ stage rsync

That appears to install correctly, tho I’m new to Manjaro so never quite certain.

In alsamixer, I have only Master and Capture (and that was the same for pulseaudio).

Any handle to jiggle, do you think?

Check ALSA audio settings with the card number or name to see controls for onboard audio

If similar audio controls are present on your system, it may require a bit of trial and error to get audio working in ALSA. The controls for this codec are a lot more complex than most pc audio codecs
