Enabling audio loopback crashes pulseaudio

Pulseaudio starts normally and works fine, but whenever I enable the ability to listen to the line in audio, it takes around 30 seconds for pulseaudio to crash entirely. have to start it up manually.

When I open it up in terminal initially, I see this when I open it up initially, but it’s inconsequential afaik

$ pulseaudio
W: [pulseaudio] pid.c: Stale PID file, overwriting.
E: [pulseaudio] udev-util.c: Failed to get card object.
E: [pulseaudio] module-alsa-card.c: Failed to find a working profile.
E: [pulseaudio] module.c: Failed to load module "module-alsa-card" (argument: "device_id="3" name="usb-FiiO_FiiO_BTR5-00" card_name="alsa_card.usb-FiiO_FiiO_BTR5-00" namereg_fail=false tsched=yes fixed_latency_range=no ignore_dB=yes deferred_volume=yes use_ucm=yes avoid_resampling=yes card_properties="module-udev-detect.discovered=1""): initialization failed.

After I initialize the audio via pactl load-module module-loopback, I get this after like 10-30 seconds

E: [alsa-sink-USB Audio] speex.c: Assertion 'speex_resampler_set_rate(state, r->i_ss.rate, r->o_ss.rate) == 0' failed at ../pulseaudio/src/pulsecore/resampler/speex.c:125, function speex_update_rates(). Aborting.

Please read this:

Especially the Linux has multiple kernels section, then try an LTS kernel and hopefully the problem will go away “automagically”. :grin:

You have both PipeWire and PulseAudio running. Please disable PipeWire:

systemctl --user disable --now pipewire.socket && systemctl --user disable --now pipewire.service && systemctl --user mask pipewire.socket

:crossed_fingers:

Thanks! I actually tried the kernel thing before, alas it didn’t help. I swapped back after seeing it didn’t.

I kind of forgot about swap, but this pc has 64 gigs of ram so I haven’t encountered issues so far. Hibernation seems nice though so I’ll set it up, even if I don’t plan on using it.

Also, ah, do you know of a clean way of disabling PipeWire? I never manually installed it; so something must have as a dependency or something. Or can I just,

sudo systemctl disable --global pipewire

Another thing, I can monitor the microphone/line in inputs completely fine with OBS on using it’s own monitor system, which I might just end up using instead. Do you think this relates to anything going on?

:question:
Not familiar with that abbreviation… :man_shrugging:

I suppose all of the above didn’t solve the issue?

If no, please provide the crashdump and the output to pacmd dump

:thinking:

Apologies, I meant OBS-Studio; the entire point of me listening in is to stream my nintendo switch; and the audio was routed in from the line-in spot. I wanted to be able to listen to the gameplay as I played and streamed it at the same time.

I have not yet disabled pipewire, systemctl says it’s not running?

$ systemctl stop pipewire
Failed to stop pipewire.service: Unit pipewire.service not loaded.
$ systemctl stop pipewire-media-session
Failed to stop pipewire-media-session.service: Unit pipewire-media-session.service not loaded.

Post a new inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width please?

:thinking:

It seems to have fully turned off after a reboot.
Well, at least the issue seems to be gone

$ inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width

EDIT: I spoke literally 1 second too early; right after I pressed enter to send this message it crashed again. Also it still appears to be running in the above dump
EDIT 2: Ah,

 Sound Server-5: PipeWire v: 0.3.38 running: no

no it seems to be stopped, I misread

Please go back here and follow instructions one-by-one.

:bowing_man:

The solution for my particular situation does seem to either use OBS as a loopback feed directly, or to just swap to pipewire via

pamac install manjaro-pipewire

I am definitely pipewire permanently if the experience is like this consistently; this is really nice.

It seems I can’t just install pulseaudio again if I wanted to using the same method; so I will have to attempt to see if it was a kernel issue later I guess.

$ pamac install manjaro-pulse

I’ll downgrade the kernel and test pulseaudio to see if the issue still occurs sometime later in the week when I don’t have work; but I highly suspect it’s just pulseaudio not being able to handle high sample rates and audio quality in general with multiple streams mixing; as I already had to lower the sample rate from 384k, to 96k to prevent crashes.
(and before you ask yes I have actual music and other audio stuff that is at that sample rate, I find it fun)

Oh gdi I edited an old post rather than posting a new one. whoops

Thank you for your time however! I really do appreciate it. nikgnomic as well

I checked pipewire sockets/services again after recent updates and it appears that the pipewire-media-session.service is no longer used

systemctl can manage root privilege elevation without sudo.
Using sudo is likely to fail for --user services
Option --global would probably work in place of more specific option --local
Option --now also stops the service and socket (so rebooting system not needed)

Using OBSstudio is a better option than using a loopback module
Line In and Microphone capture sources can be added direct from ALSA instead of via sound servers PulseAudio, JACK or Pipewire by using the + button to add sources
