Dual-GPU Laptop HDMI not recognized video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-prime

Hi, I’m dual-booting Manjaro/Windows on my laptop right now and have an issue with my external monitor not working. Upon some debugging and playing around with PRIME it is still not working but I have narrowed the issue down to my hdmi port not being visible at all.

First let’s start with some common info:

I am a bit confused as to why my video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-prime doesn’t have a version (eg. 450) associated with it like I see with others on this forum?

I am not entirely sure what version of video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-prime I am running and not sure how to find out. I believe my hdmi port is connected to my discrete GPU as it is not visible, however this (should?) be fixed as of video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-prime 450xx which as per above, I am not even sure I have. Any ideas on how I can get video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-450xx-prime on my system?

Any suggestions for getting my second monitor up and running with my laptop?

Thanks so much!

Your driver version is 455.45.01

Your driver will always be on the last version on stable, right now stable has 455 and in testing is 460,soon you will have that driver.

I don’t actually know what can be the problem but I noticed you have the 5.4 driver, can you try testing the 5.9? I know for sure the 5.10 in stable doesn’t work with the HDMI port but its fixed with the 5.10.5 in testing along with the 460 driver,so maybe the error is the same in 5.4,just update and test the 5.9 kernel.

Thanks for the quick response! I updated my kernel to 5.9. Is there a driver update that should come with it? I uninstalled and reinstalled my video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-prime after the kernel update but the version did not change.

The version shouldn’t change,is the same version, the idea is to test the HDMI port with that kernel since there is fixes sometimes that nvidia causes. If the problem persist then I have no idea what can cause this  ,you need to wait to someone else if have another idea.

Do you have any custom Xorg configuration? What’s the output of head -n 999 /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/* /etc/X11/mhwd.d/*?

If the secondary monitor is not even detected then I’m afraid it’s not the kernel modules bug, because in that case secondary monitors are detected but crashing or not displaying correctly, at least that is what I experienced.

Additionally, after the latest updates I had ENABLE secondary monitor in the Plasma’s monitor settings. Previously it was enabled automatically but now configs were reset. When I enabled it on kernel 5.10, both screens went black… It works well with other kernels.

I would test:

  • Is the secondary monitor detected on the LIVE system? (if yes, some packages are missing or something is misconfigured on your system)
  • Is the secondary monitor detected on test, default user? (if yes, your user configs are at fault)

Ah, thanks for the suggestion! It looks like I have an old xorg conf in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/

This is the only one in there:

 nmtl@nmtl-pc  /etc/modprobe.d  cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-optimus-manager.conf
Section "Device"
        Identifier "intel"
        Driver "modesetting"
        BusID "PCI:0:2:0"
        Option "DRI" "3"
EndSection

Maybe this is why only the modesetting provider shows up in xrandr. I tried adding the nvidia device to it like:

Section "Device"
        Identifier "intel"
        Driver "modesetting"
        BusID "PCI:0:2:0"
        Option "DRI" "3"
EndSection

Section "Device"
        Identifier "nvidia"
        Driver "nvidia"
        BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

but upon restart, the file resets to only having the first (intel) device and the problem persists.

Reading from the arch Prime article, it also mentions blacklisted drivers in modprobe.d. Is this something I should be concerned about?

 nmtl@nmtl-pc  /etc/modprobe.d  cat 99-nvidia.conf
#
#necessary blacklist and

#

I tried creating a fresh user testuser to no avail unfortunately. I will try a live system once I can get my hands on a USB large enough for the ISO

Do you use optimus-manager? If not, delete this file, and the automatic configuration should take of everything.

I have removed optimus manager and the conf file, the system now detects my second screen! However, it is not receiving any signal and isn’t listed in xrandr --listmonitors.

xrandr --listproviders

Providers: number : 2
Provider 0: id: 0x43 cap: 0xf, Source Output, Sink Output, Source Offload, Sink Offload crtcs: 3 outputs: 1 associated providers: 1 name:modesetting
Provider 1: id: 0xfa cap: 0x2, Sink Output crtcs: 4 outputs: 1 associated providers: 1 name:modesetting

Again, looks like only the intel gpu is being detected here, although there is now a sink and source provider.

Only the laptop screen is listed here ^

Any suggestions for next steps? I’m pretty new to linux so thank you for being so patient with me here.

It strikes me odd that you have two modesetting providers, this probably means the NVIDIA Xorg driver is not loaded or something is misconfigured. What’s the output of inxi -Gazy in this state?

Remove that line and reboot.

Thank you so much pobrn , removing that line fixed it and my second monitor is now working as an extended display!

For future reference to help people in this situation, my inxi -Gazy before removing that line was:

Graphics:
Device-1: Intel UHD Graphics 630 vendor: ASUSTeK driver: i915 v: kernel
bus ID: 00:02.0 chip ID: 8086:3e9b

  diag: 394mm (15.5")
OpenGL: renderer: Mesa Intel UHD Graphics 630 (CFL GT2) v: 4.6 Mesa 20.3.1
  direct render: Yes

Note the unloaded: nvidia in the x11 server. This is fixed when removing that line in my modprobe file.

Thanks for all the troubleshooting help everyone!
