DP monitor sound

Hello all,
thank you for manjaro!

I have three monitors - all with speakers - connected to an nVidia graphics card via display port. Now there is the following situation in gnome settings:

  • monitor 1 always has sound
  • monitor 2 and 3 only have sound when I power off the other monitor, respectively

Please let me know how to fix this!

Best regards
Gerrit

Can you switch output between monitor 2 and 3 in the audio settings?

… It will help if you provide a bit of system info: inxi -zv8 (use the </> button to format it so it appears in a scrollable box).

Then we’ll know e.g. if you are using PulseAudio or Pipewire etc. .

Same probably for output of pactl list sinks … may help. (Disclaimer: I’m no expert on audio stuff like this, though there are some very knowledgeable members here in this regard).

Thanks!

For this, it looks like you have one monitor actually running on an analogue source and the other(s) running on HDMI audio source, but I could be mistaken here.

My suspicion is that the HDMI audio has only one possible (stereo) audio output channel. Not sure if Jack or Wireplumber could fix that? A bit like my old Dell machine having only 2 “pipes” for graphics? Although I wouldn’t think that to be the case with a decent graphics card?

It looks like the primary monitor is the one using the analogue source.

Hopefully someone who knows more about this than I do will see this!

All three monitors are connected via DP. The silent one is new and has DP mini.
I have three audio devices for HDMI/Display Port output in gnome settings, one of them not working properly…

It could be a hardware limitation (I hope not); I guess something to try would be to spin up a Live session of one of the other DEs (Plasma or Xfce)? See if the results are the same there. Particularly Plasma, as I’d be in a better position to show where the settings are.

Will do…

in the meantime sometimes all three monitor audio do work. Sometimes only one monitor audio works…

Still an issue: monitor one is the only audio sink

Nvidia proprietary drivers issue?

Nvidia proprietary drivers are for graphical display

Graphics:
Device-1: NVIDIA AD102 [GeForce RTX 4090] vendor: ZOTAC driver: nvidia
    v: 550.120

HDMI audio uses Linux audio driver snd_hda_intel

Audio:
Device-1: NVIDIA AD102 High Definition Audio vendor: ZOTAC
    driver: snd_hda_intel
Sink #573

	Name: alsa_output.pci-0000_0c_00.1.hdmi-stereo

System would usually play audio to one HDMI sink output, but audio GUI controls should allow user to change the card profile to use another output

Please post more information about card profiles

Or an intermittent connection — in other words, a hardware issue.

Several years ago, I had a brand-new computer whereby most of the time I would only get sound out of one speaker, and only sometimes out of both speakers. The shop replaced the motherboard under warranty, and the problem never returned.

If there is an intermittent HDMI audio connection pactl list cards would show the corresponding output:hdmi-stereo Profile as available: no
