Dolphin doesn't remember open folders at restart since last system upgrade

Since the last major upgrade (a few days ago) dolphin stopped to remember the open tabs and folders when shutting down or restarting the system. This is different from previous behaviour. Dolphin is set to “start into folders, subwindows and windowsettings from last start” (translated from German). Reading this, I think Dolphin behaves correctly, because if it started just with the one window and tab, it will always do it that way. Either the text is falsely translated (from the English origin, I suppose), or the setting is useless. It should say “start into folders, subwindows and windowsettings from last status” or so. That is what I expect from that setting anyway, because the alternative would do what it currently does: it just opens the home folder. The only thing it keeps from the previous state (when it was shutdown) is the split window.
My system:
Operating System: Manjaro Linux
KDE Plasma Version: 6.3.4
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.13.0
Qt Version: 6.9.0
Kernel Version: 6.12.25-1-MANJARO (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: Wayland
Processors: 12 × AMD Ryzen 5 2600 Six-Core Processor
Memory: 31.3 GiB of RAM
Graphics Processor: AMD Radeon RX 570 Series
Manufacturer: Micro-Star International Co., Ltd.
Product Name: MS-7B79
System Version: 1.0

Is this behaviour a known bug or issue? I remember having that problem months or years ago, it vanished after another system upgrade. Right now, it’s just annoying, since I use Dolphin a lot and need different folders open in different tabs/windows. To set that again each time I restart the PC is a nuisance.

Sometimes this sort of thing can be simply fixed by toggling the setting, clicking “Apply”, then toggling it back and hitting “Apply” again. It’s worth trying this, if you haven’t already done so.

Thanks, I tried, and it seems to have worked. However, I only closed dolphin and started it again. I’ll check later if it also works, when the system is being rebooted or shutdown and then started again.

It’s worth noting that if you have more than one Dolphin window open, I find that the last-closed one is the only one where the tabs are saved.

So, if I have the first one with say 10 tabs, then open a second with e.g. 5, close the first, then the second, and then open a new window, only the 5 tabs from the last-closed are loaded.

Yes, that I am aware of. But I didn’t open a second window of dolphin, at least not to my knowledge. Thanks for the hint.

I used to think this is the case.
But sadly, Dolphin is unpredictable.

I have Dolphin windows:
A - 5 tabs.
B - 4 tabs.
C - 2 tabs.
D - 3 tabs.

I always close the Dolphin windows in this sequence: D, C, B, A, follow by reboot.
After reboot, I launch Dolphin.
Half of the time, I get C or D restored.

I don’t see a pattern, and which window chosen to be restored, seems random.

I usually have only one window open and rarely, very rarely, two. Hence I cannot confirm your observation. But I also do not remember, if Dolphin started window 1 or window 2, after both windows were closed. I am not going to try it out, though, because I want to keep my tabs as they are…
I requested kind of a profile management, in which case you could save the state of dolphin and reload it, in case something like this happens again (and you could have four profiles, one for each window, for instance). But somehow that request was rejected, I don’t recall why.

Now this is interesting. I had a look at that config file (dolphin_dolphin_dolphin) and find in there a description of all tabs which had been opened before dolphin decided not to open them again. Very mysterious. The setting “NumberOfWindows” in the group “Number” is set to 1, so that can’t be the fix for this problem.

Edit: Just FYI: this is in reply to the bugfix reported by @papajoke

It’s a known bug, and it has been fixed upstream already.
