and does it work just by installing it from Pamac without additional steps?
i was using the ones from the AUR when they were still available, and just recently read about this package in the Forum.
Considering that it uses gtk
and that gtk
is a graphical widget toolkit, I would presume that it has a GUI, yes.
According to the package information, it uses gtk3
, even.
Aside from the already noted toolkit implying a graphical program, a query of the provided files shows a desktop file that also implies the same.
$ pacman -Fl proton-vpn-gtk-app | grep desk
proton-vpn-gtk-app usr/share/applications/protonvpn.desktop
Thanks
i was also asking if it works without additional steps since in this thread they say that you need to first clean remnants of previous installations and maybe other steps(i didn’t fully read it) and it’s an older thread.
Launch it.
If it does not work then remove remnants from your HOME as outlined there.
That is if that was ever required.
The threads marked solution is about adding a third party repository and the subsequent comments suggesting to remove old proton folders from the home directory were never replied to.
Thanks i’ll try and report back.
Be sure you also install the optional dependency, libappindicator-gtk3
so that the tray icon works. Somehow I missed that when I originally installed. Easy enough to add after the fact.
proton-vpn-gtk-app is the official Proton VPN app repackaged by upstream Arch LInux.
It is unsupported by Proton VPN on Arch Linux - because of the repackage - but otherwise it work as expected.
We currently don’t support installation of our official app through Flatpak or the [Arch official extra repositories(Arch Linux - proton-vpn-gtk-app 4.8.2-1 (any)), although community contributors have published unofficial versions that you can use at your own risk. These may work, but they are not developed by us and we can’t provide support for them.
– How to use Proton VPN on Linux | Proton VPN
I have taken precautionary steps to ensure compatibility by switching my system to use systemd-resolved as my DNS resolver.
Although the following is about NordVPN the underlying DNS issue is exactly the same.
