Getting wild “flickering” after the update on a Lenovo Thinkpad X260. After booting the screen displays a few lines of text, turns alternating black and grey.
Only way to access the system is via USB boot disk and chroot.
Downgrading the mesa drivers didn’t help.
first thing to try would be to boot into different kernel
Thats what I tried first, too. Should have mentioned it. Rebuilt initramfs and grub too, to be on the safe side and reran the system update to make sure it’s at least complete.
Tried to boot into runlevel 3 editing grub config without success.
Downgraded mesa driver to 25.1 as suggested in this thread.
Gave up and cried for help.
I’ve split your post and its replies in to this dedicated thread.
Could you provide us with the output of inxi -zv8c0
from the chroot
environment? This may help here.
Thanks.

Since my USB drive was running mesa 25.0 I used manjaro-downgrade to take mesa and libmesa down another notch.
Still no success.
Updating the kernel to linux617 worked, though, so the problem might not have been related to the mesa driver. Weird.
BTW read the notice about 6.17 being not production ready and tried 6.16 - doesn’t work. Even weirder.
Sorry I didn’t reply earlier; I was going to mention that your inxi
shows x11
but then remembered that this is from chroot
.
Which session are you using now? echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE
… if not Wayland, maybe switching to that may produce favourable results with the other Kernels?
Also, I see you have no swap
defined; although probably not related, this may be worth tending to especially if you use a browser a lot, or do any other “memory-intensive” tasks.
You say you only downgraded the mesa driver – however, did you see this under Known Issues and Solutions?
@soundofthunder Thanks for your reply. Yes, saw that and tried after checking out older kernels. Didn’t work.
@BG405 Still running X11. Switching to Wayland might be an idea… thanks!
Noticed ‘no swap’, too - strange. The system has a generous swap partition - have to look into it. Or do a full reinstall over the weekend.
Has your swap
partition been enabled?
The command is:
sudo swapon /dev/sda2
…but, please use it in context of the instructions at;
- Swap (Manjaro Wiki)
You’ll likely be glad you did;
especially as you have no Nvidia in the mix.
Tested the current ISO images on my wife’s Thinkpad X-260:
- XFCE (manjaro-xfce-25.0.8-250902-linux612.iso) gives black screen with flicks into grey
- Cinnamon (manjaro-cinnamon-25.0.3-250609-linux612.iso) works
- Gnome (manjaro-gnome-25.0.8-250902-linux612.iso) gives black screen with flicks into grey
- KDE (manjaro-kde-25.0.8-250902-linux612.iso) gives black screen with flicks into grey
Problem might be related to the splash screen…
This may be a possibility; what happens if you press e at the GRUB boot menu, then remove “quiet” and “splash” from the GRUB cmdline before booting?
Did that months ago…
Strongly suspect Plymouth being involved - found a similar problem in this forum. Guess my next step is removing Plymouth to see what happens.
Indeed. Removing plymouth
from the HOOKS
line in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
should be sufficient for a test.
Worth a try, but unfortunately, it didn’t do the trick. Uninstalled Plymouth using this guide. Removed the hook and uninstalled the packages.
Boots until the message ‘Triggering uevents…’ - then again the flashing black/grey screen on all older kernels.
Didn’t find a solution, but after applying the stable update 2025-09-26 the machine boots again.
Even swap is back online - no idea why it suddenly works again.
Magic.
Thanks to all for helping me.
Closed without a solution.
