Display shows only 1024x768 resolution

This morning my 2 yo display running Wayland at 1920x1080 switched to X11 at 1024x768 4:3 as the only available resolution. No amount of restarting, shutting down, logging out, manually selecting wayland at the login screen changes this. The strange thing is the login screen is 1920x1080 it is only at bootup that the resolution changes. I have also performed a timeshift restore which made no difference.,

TL4 edit: removed screenshot

[Edit] I couldn’t solve the issue, I was stuck on 1024x768 so I did a full Manjaro kde OS install to the root partition. This worked.

In hindsight, my problem may have been caused by installing Alacritty.

Welcome to the Manjaro community

As a new or infrequent forum user, please take some time to familiarise yourself with Forum requirements, and the many ways to use the forum to your benefit:

Update Announcements

The Update Announcements contain important information and a Known Issues and Solutions section that should generally be checked before posting a request for support.

System Information

While information from *-fetch type apps might be fine for someone wishing to buy your computer, for Support purposes it’s better to ask your system directly; :eyes:

Output of the inxi command with appropriate parameters will achieve this (naturally, formatted according to forum guidelines) and will generally be more useful for those wishing to help:

inxi --filter --verbosity=8

or the short form:

inxi -zv8

Be prepared to provide output from other commands whenever asked. It’s equally important to provide as much actionable information as possible in your first post, rather than simply indicating there is a problem.

I had this problem, initially I thought it was updates changing it back, but maybe it’s because I log in automatically. The solution is System Settings > Colors & Themes > Log In Screen (SDDM) > Behaviors The first line change Automatically log in, change to Wayland. Apply.

I have this problem with X11. Only on one (physical) screen/monitor (an Acer). The other one (Dell) works fine. Started after I accidentally yanked the graphics cable (HDMI) out of the running computer and the screen was still on. Haven’t been able to fix that so I use the Dell for this computer.

Your topic title is potentially confusing for anyone who might like to help. I have changed that for you. No charge.

To my knowledge, it is not possible to automatically switch from Wayland to X11 (or vice versa) without manual intervention; in short, one must select it from the login screen (SDDM) via the dropdown (bottom left-hand corner of screen).

Monitor resolutions are also not specific to a DE/WM.

Please edit you first post and clarify what you mean, for the sake of those finding this topic. Include any other information that is relevant, like (for example) that you are using multiple monitors. We can now see that from your inxi output, however, knowing how they are specifically connected and otherwise set up may also be useful; as might specific details of each monitor concerned.

Please also specify anything you might have done to the system before the last boot (before you noticed the issue). For example, did you perform a system update? If so, did it complete without issue? Etc.

I just noticed this:

In fact, it may indeed make a difference, albeit not the difference you might have hoped for.

Having successfully performed a timeshift restore, the previous state of your system has been overwritten with what is presumed to be a working configuration.

This makes it difficult to predict any system related factor that might have contributed.
