Discord refusing to open

Hello all, I’ve been experiencing this problem for about 2 weeks now. Discord will do an endless loop on me refusing to start up. Ive tried uninstalling discord fully and even using the PTB build, and it still doesn’t open! This occurs across two of my machines that run manjaro with KDE X11. On the first time I start discord its on the starting screen with the spinning discord logo, if i close the app and open it back up it shows me a blank page. Can anyone recommend me some advice as I’ve been stuck using the browser discord.

My first suggestion would be for you to test if the issue also occurs when you run KDE Plasma on Wayland.

Instructions for switching Plasma from X11 to Wayland

You can change your Plasma session from X11 to Wayland by selecting the session type at the login screen (Wayland is now KDE’s default for Plasma).

If you have set up autologin to skip the password screen, you can change to a Wayland session by opening System Settings → Colors & Themes → Login Screen (SDDM) → Behavior.

To see if your current session is running on X11 or Wayland, run the following command in a terminal:

echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE

For those curious about how Wayland differs from X11:

My second suggestion would be for you to try launching discord from a terminal, and see if any errors or warnings appear in the terminal.

Finally, some system info would also be helpful. Please read the pre-prepared information below and post the output of inxi -zv8, correctly formatted according to forum requirements.

As a new or infrequent forum user, you are encouraged to take some time to familiarise yourself with Forum requirements; in particular, the many ways to use the forum to your benefit:

The Update Announcements contain a Known Issues and Solutions section and should generally be checked before posting a request for support.

Output of the inxi command (with appropriate parameters, and formatted according to forum guidelines) will generate information useful for those wishing to help:

inxi --filter --verbosity=8

or the short form (preferred):

inxi -zv8

Regards.

There’s Discord (Official Repositories) and Discord (Flatpak) and then there’s a choice of webcord, Vencord.

Remember, Discord is proprietary and controversial as it will refuse to open (the official app) if it isn’t updated within hours of them pushing updates.

Vesktop always opened when I needed it.

Hello, sorry for taking a while to respond. Ben I tried vesktop and it doesn’t do the endless starting anymore but it still opens up to a blank screen. For you scotty65 I tried doing a Wayland session and using the discord command and it repeated the same thing I said in my initial post. Also is there anyway I can send images on here? Thanks

Also forgot to mention webcord opens on a blank screen aswell!!! I don’t know why only discord related apps open on blank screens.

I Found the fix! For some reason discord was refusing when I was connected to a specific Mullvad VPN server (es-mad-wg-101, 102, 201, 202). My best guess is someone got IP banned on those servers and now its refusing to allow a connection. How strange….. but oh well at least I can help others with this same exact problem. Also thanks Ben for informing me of vencord and webcord, very cool projects and i will continue to use them!

EDIT

Also not sure only the app wasn’t working when connecting to those Mullvad servers the website still worked? Maybe its a deeper problem than a simple IP ban
