Digikam broken after last stable update

After the last stable update, Digikam 8.8 does not start anymore. I see the splash screen and the main window opens for a few seconds, than it is gone. I renamed the settings folders, but that did not help.

I tried the flatpak and that worked, but it does not read my settings. But the AppImage works with my settings, so I have a solution but would like to fix this. Any ideas?

Do any error messages get displayed if you start digikam from the command line? If so, copy-and-paste them and format properly (see here for some notes on how to format).

Output of the following command, formatted according to forum requirements, is often useful:

inxi -zv8c0

Digikam is currently working for me.

System Information

While information from *-fetch type apps might be fine for someone wishing to buy your computer, for Support purposes it’s better to ask your system directly; :eyes:

Output of the inxi command (with appropriate parameters, and formatted according to forum guidelines) will generate information useful for those wishing to help:

Suggested inxi command (use either):

inxi -zv8 (short-form)
inxi --filter --verbosity=8 (long-form)
inxi man pages (manual)
Running `inxi` within a `chroot` environment
  • Add --color=0 to the long-form command, or…
  • Change the short-form command to inxi -zv8c0

This is likely unrelated to your issue. However, kernel 6.17 has reached EOL and will no longer receive updates via Manjaro repositories. It will soon be removed completely from the repositories.

It is highly recommended to switch to either of kernel 6.18 (LTS) or 6.12 (LTS) at your earliest convenience.

No issues on my 2 PC and on my notebook with Digikam 8.8. I use version installed from Manjaro official repo.

Yes, I also use it from the Manjaro official repo. The last thing I did a few days ago was doing a search. Then I closed it. The next time I openend Digikam (big stable update in between), it opens up to my last view with the search, then crashes.

What irritates me is, that the AppImage seems to use the same settings, but did not try to open the search after startup and does not crash.

What “Search” did you do, and was the search performed from within Digikam?

If that is true, maybe the last opened file or path no longer exists. That could be worth investigating.

I installed it in a Plasma VM just now.

There was another update in the meantime - after the last “the big one”

I installed like this:

sudo pacman -Syu digikam
(covering the update as well as the installation of the not previously installed digikam)

When it starts, it goes through a whole lot of menus/questions,
the last of which prompts to download even more stuff to use some AI and face recognition features

It does start, however - can’t do anything more with it since this is just a VM with no camera hardware connected.

You said:

Did you do that?
(you didn’t tell about it or the result)

The program does create not only one folder with files in it.

it creates:
~/.local/share/digikam (with files in it)
~/.config/digikam_systemrc
~/.config/digikamrc
and
~/.cache/digikam

remove all of those - or back them up to be able to restore the before state …
preferably while not being logged in in a graphical session - but from TTY
(do not back up ~/.cache - this will be re-created, it’s not important and can be deleted any time you like)

There was another update in the meantime - after the last “the big one”

I installed like this:

sudo pacman -Syu digikam

OK, just ran the update, which uninstalled the AppImage and it works again. Digikam is starting now with the last folder I have browsed with the AppImage so it seems fixed. Unfortunately, we won’t know if it was something weird with my search or some bug that is already fixed in 8.8.0-2. But I haven’t checked that the normal package and the AppImage did have exact the same version. I saw, that both were 8.8.0, but did not check the number after the dash, so that might be one of the reasons why they rolled out 8.8.0-2.
Thanks a lot for the help !

We probably won’t.
It is however unlikely that the AppImage got uninstalled because of the update.

Whatever … it works now.

Having two essentially identical things installed
(one as AppImage, one as a regular package)
without the ability to discern which one is actually used at a time
is not an ideal situation … :grimacing:

When running sudo pacman -Syu digikam, it threw the message that the AppImage will be uninstalled because of whatever conflict.

Pacman probably new that

Appimage is a standalone self-containerized app (like an .exe file) that has zero relation with pacman, so pacman wasn’t complaining any conflict directly, maybe indirectly and some other optional and/or orphaned dependency was cleaned up that mentioned appimage (like some sort of runner or appicon or stuff like that). I’m always a curious person so I often read the transaction histories through pamac’s GUI, if I’m not sure what happened and why, and trace it back to it’s roots until I understand and figure out, so the next time I’ll know (just my hints of 2cents)

Looks like i have marked my original thread as solved to early, the problem reoccurs again. I re-ran pacman and there is again a new release 8.8.0-2, but that did not help. Same as last time, the main screen opens for a few seconds, than it is gone. After it worked the last time, there was a stable update in between.

The workaround is the same as last time, installing digikam-appimage from AUR. And Pamac also showed a confilict with digikam:

As the AppImage works for me, I will stick to it and retry with the next Digikam release. But maybe anyone has an idea how we can track this down?

As I use the minimal editions and want to try something related to this:
What does one need to install, in the Plasma DE, to get to be presented with the possibility to install AppImage software through pamac-manager?

… I may have had AppImage support but removed it - can’t remember

I know how to install and use AppImages without pamac, but I’d like to do what @Argumon did and how they did it.

They said the AppImage was removed as it was in conflict with the repo version.
That could not happen when the package manager doesn’t even know about the AppImage.

@Argumon
I just looked myself and:
there is no AppImage support in pamac

So:
I wonder how it is even possible that pamac complained about a conflict between the repo version of Digikam and the AppImage of Digikam.

… confused it with Snap or Flatpak?

these are the files and directories which are created by using the repo version:

remove those
and you should have a clean slate

In any case I’d make sure that only one of the two variants is installed at any one time - to avoid possible conflict.

There is a digikam-appimage package available via the AUR:

Perhaps poor wording added to the misunderstanding, but it certainly exists. There is also digikam-without-akonadi and digikam-git via the AUR, and a Digikam flatpak version as well as the official repo package (preferred).

The digikam-appimage seems to only be named such because it’s derived from an .appimage package – the PKGBUILD reveals all – so what the user receives is not an .appimage container at all – it’s only named that way to distinguish it from other AUR versions.

I found this one after enabling AUR support in Pamac preferences.
Looks like an AppImage to me, not a Snap or Flatpak
