Destroyed Laptop Screen causes Bugs

Due to mysterious bugs on my HP Bang Olufsen Elitebook (the time and date were often set to April 16th at 4:20 p.m., and I couldn’t get onto the internet), I completely smashed it. Well, at least the screen. I thought the PC was broken, but the other day I had the idea of connecting an external screen. It actually connected automatically. Unfortunately, it didn’t mirror, but instead expanded it, which is why it “jumped”. I couldn’t manage to set the settings to “mirror” in time. It jumps back every time and then I have to start over and can’t do it. So I ripped out a few cables that were left and voilà…now only the menu bar jumps.

So I thought it was malware, like the April 16th 4:20 p.m. bug, but it’s clearly a hardware problem: I also had the bugs in the installation menu of the associated live test Ubuntu.

It’s Wayland, which is why I didn’t get very far with Xrandr commands.
Do you think it helps to turn off the pointer (not all of them, not the external mouse)? How do I turn off ONLY the touchpad?

→ It could be a Touchpad issue, right?

Why cant I include links in my posts?

Edit:
Three options:

  1. how can I switch off the touchpad in the bios?
  2. how can I disconnect the touchpad cable from the mainboard?
  3. how can I switch off the touchpad via the terminal in Manjaro…BUT: Touchpad /“tastfeld” is already switched off in the graphically visualized settings)?

Another explanation for the Bug??

You can - just not as active links.
Just format them as preformatted text: </>

Whether or not anyone will bother watching videos to figure out your issue is another question.

@Laemmergeier_info, you mix a lot of things. There are hardware damages, like the screen, you tried to fix it somehow yourself, you have problems with the touchpad and look for hardware and software solution and think about changes in your firmware. I would suggest, sort yourself out a bit and bring it in a logical structure, summarizing the hardware situation and post output of

inxi -Fza

and then explain again your issue and solutions you tried.

It could be helpful to have a look into this link:

You might consider replacing the mainboard battery, in case it has lost its potency. This can cause BIOS reset, with the current date being one of the settings lost.

Until your forum privileges have been sufficiently upgraded, you can post a link in this fashion; https://forum.manjaro.org which allows others to easily copy/paste the link if desired.

Regards.

  1. I had various problems with the PC, which is why I re-installed it from Ubuntu to Manjaro.
  1. despite all this, I still had malware on it (e.g.: red, transparent rectangle in my Libre Office files, placed over 33% of the document)
  2. when the battery runs out, the date is set to a random date like May 5, 2078, isn’t it? Possibly also 1 Jan, but April 16 at 16:20 is a cannabis culture day, which is why I thought computer technologists were mocking me on behalf of the state. I am NOT a blank slate.

Unfortunately this is not a part of my culture so the date had no obvious meaning. Considering your comment had ruled out the apparent malware possibility in favour of it being ‘clearly a hardware problem’ the state of the battery was a valid suggestion.

Subsequently you changed tack and again claim malware:

If you believe that malware (or worse) is the root of your problems, I’m afraid we cannot help with that, aside from the usual recommendation to seek professional help from those who actually deal with that kind of thing.

If you can identify a specific issue and explain it coherently, preferably in detail, others might be willing to help to the extent that they are able.

Keep in mind that this is mostly a community of volunteers and while respectful commentary is encouraged, attitudes displaying entitlement or any form of hostility toward forum members or staff will not be tolerated for long.

+++THE OLD ISSUE IS NOT FIXED, BUT I HAVE A NEW ONE+++

I wanted to install Ventoy to reset my Lenovo, which is also infected with malware, or to install Windows and update the bios or Uefi, but since then my Manjaro system on the HP no longer recognizes USB sticks, hahahaha.

At first I used an unnecessary number of commands…I know:

sudo pacman -Syu
sudo pacman -Syyu
sudo pamac checkupdates -a

sudo pamac upgrade -a
sudo pacman -S archlinux-keyring manjaro-keyrin

sudo pacman-key --populate archlinux manjaro

Subsequently:

sudo pacman -S ventoy

sudo sed -Ei '/EnableAUR/s/^#//' /etc/pamac.conf

pamac build ventoy-bin

USB ports no longer work…

So I tried to uninstall Ventoy:

sudo pacman -Rns ventoy

pamac remove ventoy-bin

pamac remove -o

pamac clean -uv -k 0

pamac clean -v -k 2

Well, that didn’t help. The USB ports still no longer work.

Its pretty obvious:

What are the odds? Should play Lotto.

This won’t help combat your apparent problem with malware and other nasties, but may at least be beneficial in other ways:

Warning

Haphazardly throwing commands at the terminal without any clear understanding of what those commands do is never recommended.

Valid commands will be faithfully executed regardless of whether or not they are appropriate for the intended purpose, or might cause further complication.

Use of the AUR is unsupported in Manjaro (or Arch), but if it must be used, switching to the Unstable branch is usually suggested.

Kernel 6.5.x is unsupported, having reached EOL (a very long time ago). Please see the following to learn how to correct this:

You have no swap space defined. This should be attended to at your earliest convenience, especially if you plan on using hibernation.

And since installing Manjaro the machine has clearly not been maintained. A rolling release model distribution such as Manjaro requires frequent attention to updates and general maintenance.

Without this, and as you might only now begin to realise, your Manjaro installation will suffer greatly.

Unsupported

As it stands, your system is in an unsupported state wherein rendering assistance is exceedingly difficult for any who might wish to help.

Rather than focus on all of these apparent problems I suggest a total re-installation from scratch, starting with a blank slate that you claim to have no affinity with.

Ventoy

Ventoy is available in the official Manjaro repositories. Building Ventoy via the AUR is not recommended or supported.

Create a Ventoy USB (ISO Launcher)

Boot with a Ventoy USB, and ISO files are automatically listed in the Ventoy menu, and can be booted directly. A 32GB capacity USB should allow ample space to store several ISOs of your choice; an 8GB capacity USB might hold one, or two ISO’s; do the math.

Ventoy is available from the official Manjaro extra repository:

sudo pacman -S ventoy

Write the Ventoy system to an empty USB drive;
use /dev/sdX to target the device itself, and not a partition:

Create a Ventoy USB (for MSDOS/MBR booting):

sudo sh ventoy -i -r 100 -S -L VOLUME /dev/sdX

Create a Ventoy USB (for UEFI/GPT booting):

sudo sh ventoy -i -r 100 -S -g -L VOLUME /dev/sdX
  • Enable -s or disable -S Secure Boot.
  • Substitute VOLUME for a volume label name to use.
  • Substitute /dev/sdX for the location of your USB device.
  • Preserve some space on the target device (example allows 100mb).

Updating the Ventoy USB:

Update the Ventoy system on an existing Ventoy USB;
ensure the updated Ventoy version is available in Manjaro; and then:

sudo ventoy -u /dev/sdX
  • The Ventoy USB update process is non-destructive.

BIOS

An updated BIOS may be available from HP which might include new features and/or (critical) security updates.

USB

Regarding your apparent USB issue; I found this:

While this may not address your specific USB problem, a quick search will reveal many other reports on the HP site that might. There seems to be a common issue with HP laptops and USB. Good luck.

Regards.

Just to add to that, make sure the Manjaro image that is used for re-installation is a fairly recent one (not older than one or two months). That will make updating after the installation a lot easier.

Recent Manjaro images can be downloaded from:

As soon as I have my data in order, I plan to switch to Kylin (Thinkpad) & Windows 11 (HP Elitebook).

I mean I was still running Ubuntu during my Thailand vacation.
According to the terminal:
I seem to have reinstalled the system on 10.09. I think I used a new iso from the Manjaro page.

The USB-Stick are not recognized by lsblk. They should work while booting, right?

I’m not sure, but I would expect it to be reset to a particular time and date in the past rather than random. :man_shrugging:

4:20 could be a cannabis reference but April 16 doesn’t seem to be one (I looked it up). Surely it would be April 20, aka 4/20.

I doubt your interpretation is correct, I would think it’s more likely to be the date the firmware was made or went active or something along those lines. Like a default date because it couldn’t be anything prior to that, as the firmware didn’t exist or wasn’t available before then. :man_shrugging:

Sorry, my bad:
Because of 16:20 or 4:20 pm
It was the 20th of April 4:20 pm.
I mixed it up, while explaining it. Not the other way around. Sorry, not sorry.

I am 110% sure my interpretation is correct.
Before that, it was the 5th of May 2078. Same Computer.

Your / partition is already pretty packed. Also, as mentioned already by @soundofthunder you should implement a swap partition or file.

I should install Nova Linux, you said?
I have an issue. I have this issue under a live Ubuntu & Manjaro. I know that my drive is packed. Please: help me with my issue. Do not explain me things I already know. I could buy a new SSD for 50€. My menu would still blink.

Nobody said this.

Then do something about it as it could be part of your issue. Or ignore it, but what kind of helpful tips are you expecting here, then?

Your issues could well stem from you smashing your screen.
Who knows what broke in the wake of it?
You don’t.
We don’t.

I’ll reiterate what you already know:
your / partition is pretty much full

As you know (hopefully), ext4 file systems, upon creation, by default, reserve 5% of the available space for root only.
The upshot is:
your user and every process not running as root has access to 5% less disk space as is reported as still available.
Keep in mind that the file system itself also takes some space - so you are really tight on space.

It can be eased up by reducing the amount reserved for root
tune2fs -m 1 /dev/nvme0n1p2
(-m X is the percentage)

Any other tips are very welcome.

It’s likely hardware damage, considering your initial post.
