The desktop doesn’t start upon login, and the wallpaper can’t be changed in the setting, there is also no icon shown on the desktop. How to let desktop auto-start upon booting up?
Desktop not showing any icon, can't change wallpaper in setting, right click desktop no menu pop out
You don’t know how to change the wallpaper?
Settings-Desktop-Background for the default wallpapers.
Desktop Icons:
Settings-Desktop-Icons choose which Default icons that you want.

Do you have xfdesktop and thunar installed?
yes, I had those two installed
I tried to change the user to root, and the desktop shows up as usual.
This hints that there may be something wrong in the user’s configuration.
The desktop’s settings are stored in ~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfce4-desktop.xml, you could check it for anything suspicious.
Otherwise, you may need to force it anew:
- delete/rename the file
- log out
If doing so with the file alone is not enough, you may need to reset the whole Xfce setting, by doing the same to ~/.config/xfce4.
