Desktop login not showing at startup, have to use runlevel 3 and startx

The issue started when I was working in a SSH X-forwarding session, when a GUI application in the session froze the entire desktop. Being forced to hard reset, every subsequent boot results in a black screen at startup. Pressing Ctrl + Alt + F5 or otherwise to bring up a TTY terminal flashes it for a second or two, then goes to a single blinking cursor. The only option I have to open the desktop is to add runlevel 3 in the kernel boot options, then run startx from there. I tried the guides from Desktop environment does not start on load. I have to run startx, but to no avail.

What is the output of:

These are the results:

     Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/lightdm.service; enabled; preset: disabled)

Run:

systemctl enable lightdm.service --now;
systemctl status lightdm.service

And following below change you should be good next boot.

I tried this, the TTY crashes after attempting to start the service. Furthermore, I discovered this is reproducible by attempting to change the brightness of the screen using hardware buttons.
