Dell XPS 9500 random display freeze

Hello,
I’m using a Dell XPS 9500 (2020) laptop since May and facing an very annoying issue on linux.
Almost randomly, but more often when watching Youtube-Videos, the display freezes and it seems like nothing is working anymore. The whole screen is stuck, cursor doesn’t move. Sometimes there is a pixeled purple horizontal line.
But the system didn’t freeze. If I was watching a video, the sound is still playing like if nothing happend. With a keyboard shortcut I’m able to lock the screen so that I need to login again. After that the problem is gone, everything is fine again.
Recently I tried to check system logs to see some hints but I couldn’t find anything related or helpful (at least to me).

For the most time I used Pop_OS because I thought it will cause less issues with the graphics card. Now I installed Manjaro (also with gnome) because I use it on my desktop pc too and always prefered. Same freeze issues. First time when I installed thunderbird and set it up.

Originally this laptop is being shipped with Windows, which I rarely use and just for gaming. But I never noticed that issue on Windows.

There are many people having the same problems but no clear fix. Some say they deactivated panel self refresh to fix. But I don’t know how to do it.

On Pop_OS you can quickly switch the used graphics card but this didn’t change or fix anything.

I hope someone here can help me with tips and instructions. I’m still new to Linux (switched from Mac).

If I call Dell Support they tell me that Linux is officially not supported so they could do some tests with Windows, which wouldn’t show anything I guess. Somehow I think this is not a hardware issue anyway.

It just happend again during a youtube video. I don’t know how to lock the screen on Manjaro so I had to restart. Afterwards I opened System Log and maybe it helps someone here.
I don’t know why but I have two entrys on the left “Xorg.0.log” and “Xorg.1.log”.

I reinstalled Manjaro today, this time with XFCE instead of Gnome. No freeze so far. Fingers crossed.

UPDATE: Now it happend here too. Took longer than on the other setups. While watching a Youtube-Video again. But I didn’t had to lock or restart. After about 5 or 7 seconds it worked again and the browser tab was closed.
Is it possible that this has something to do with the window management?

I too have a Dell XPS 9500 and was seeing this issue using i3. I eventually figured out that an application I had installed ( Barrier ) was causing the issue. Once I removed the application the freezing issue went away.

What I would suggest is that you review the list of applications you have installed and check to see if any of them have open issues which cause the screen to freeze.

A more drastic approach would be reinstalling Manjaro, which you’ve done recently, and see if the freezing issue is present on a bare install. Then, add the applications you’ve explicitly installed one-by-one to see if the issue presents itself.

If closing the tab fixed issue, then that leads me to think it may be related to your browser. Have you tried different browsers to see if the screen continues to freeze?

@eric321 thank you for you reply and help. Sorry that I answer so late.
The idea about investigating into specific apps is a good one. But the issue happend without any extra install after fresh Manjaro installation. The same with Pop_OS.
I usually use Firefox, which is also preinstalled on these systems. I can try to use another browser, but this issue happend many times in different applications too. Like Thunderbird or while playing games.
Does you XPS also have the dedicated GTX 1650 ti?

Hi, I find this is an issue if the dedicated GPU is stuck trying to spin up.
I tried with optimus-manager to force Integrated and after every reboot I run nvidia-smi at least one time. This will try to spin up the dGPU and if no output happens, the same freeze will occur within seconds. If it however succeeds with the output of nvidia-smi then it should no longer freeze until next reboot.

This is an issue with nvidia driver as far as I can tell.

Hello @daowanijo
thanks for you reply.
Why is this problem occuring when I use only the integrated Intel gpu then?
I don’t understand but this is super frustrating.
Can you tell me more please about what you are doing with nvidia-smi and it is for?

When you say you are only using integrated GPU, are you 100% sure? As in, did you already setup optimus-manager and when you run and set it to integrated?
You can also check with
watch cat /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:01:00.0/power/runtime_status
If it says ‘suspended’ then yes the dGPU is powered down. If it says ‘active’ it is in use.

nvidia-smi queries the nvidia gpu and will list any processes running on it:

The above output is a fresh Manjaro installation (no optimus manager yet) and as you can see Xorg is running on the GPU.

When I install optimus-manager on a similar laptop, sometimes I get the symptom you describe. To avoid it, I boot system, and then run nvidia-smi. If it gets stuck and no output happens, it will hang just like you describe. If it prints an output, there should be no processes listed, so Xorg should not be shown in the list. When it prints the output successfully, there should be no more issues as now both GPUs have been queried once successfully.

Basically you can take advantage of nvidia-smi to invoke the problem early, since it varies per reboot. This is likely a driver bug, but I am not 100% sure the cause of why the dGPU hangs and then hangs the system sometimes. But doing this mitigates the issue for the current boot.

Thank you very much @daowanijo
Now I get it.
I switched to the Intel GPU and when I run nvidia-smi I get this output (instead of the table when dGPU is active):
NVIDIA-SMI has failed because it couldn't communicate with the NVIDIA driver. Make sure that the latest NVIDIA driver is installed and running.
I don’t have optimus manager installed or set up.

Oh sorry, I was assuming you were using proprietary nvidia drivers. If you are using open source drivers then what I said above most likely does not apply to you :|.
Sorry I have no experience with the open source gpu drivers

I have proprietary NVIDIA drivers. No open source drivers.

What is the output of this command (assuming dGPU is on 01:00:00, if not check lspci)?
watch cat /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:01:00.0/power/runtime_status

What is the output of mhwd (or screenshot of the graphical utility “Hardware Configuration”?

I’m now trying Manjaro i3 community edition. I was about to celebrate but the screen freezed too. But after couple of seconds it fixed itself somehow.

Output of watch cat /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:01:00.0/power/runtime_status is suspended.

Output of mhwd:

Sorry I should have specified, my mistake:
mhwd -li.

Your issue is quite strange if its somehow recovering.
Also, temporarily switch to the LTS kernel (5.10) “kernel” utility or use:
sudo mhwd-kernel -i linux510
Then in grub boot choose advanced and boot kernel 5.10.

See if the issue persists.

Next time the freeze happen and manages to recover, also send the output of:
journalctl --catalog --priority=3 --boot=0

Thank you @daowanijo
Can you tell me how to do “then in grub boot choose advanced and book kernel 5.10”?

When you boot your system grub should show up like this:

You pick advanced option and boot the 5.10 kernel choice.

Ok, I’m usung 5.10 now and started a video to test it. This is the longest time ever without issues. I will continue testing and tell if it happens again.
I also tried 5.14 but the issue also appeard.

So what can we learn from this?

It just happend again :sob:

:frowning:
I was hoping it was kernel issue.

If it recovered send me output of:
journalctl --catalog --priority=3 --boot=0

If it didn’t recover and you had to reboot do this instead:
journalctl --catalog --priority=3 --boot=-1

I had to lock and unlock the screen. This is the output:
