DELL workstation huge performance problem on battery

This DELL portable workstation have extremely powerfull hardware, and have no performance problems whatsoever in games / cad / 3d / music creation / general stuff while plugged.

But when you unplug on battery it lags like sh^t everywhere it possibly can, even simple stuff like X itself (window resize etc).

As far as i personally can debug this is mainly CPU related, since even when you watch 4k video & do some 3D, CPU always stays 800-900 mHz which is way to low for such kind of tasks, also if you launch game like native Hitman (2016) it will lag like sh^t, obviously coz CPU is still not switching…

I believe Manjaro needs an update on something for this hardware, since it’s fairly new, most likely CPU / video and something related.

Unless i missed something…

Tested both in Manjaro Deepin & Manjaro KDE (just in case) behaves the same.

Also this model have pretty complicated BIOS, with probably related stuff like:
Intel SpeedShift technology
Intel SpeedStep

Maybe Manjaro doesn’t go well with those?

This laptop came & officially supported with Ubuntu btw (i don’t really like it at all), but as far as i remember there was no problems unplugged, at least no obvious ones even without proprietary drivers installed…

Have you tried running “powertop”? You can out put to a file and then it suggests commands to run to lower power usage. Helped me. I run the script I made when I boot and have much more battery life.

your governor is set to use “powersave” when on battery and “performance” on a/c. its not uncommon for this to be that way. you can easily change it in tlp by setting the default mode to AC and make it persistent, also “cpupower” is a tool that can also do this easily, its what i use.

also, tlpui is a gui tool and makes editing tlp configuration much easier.

Well i guess my problem is that Manjaro defaults (means nothing powerrealted touched at all) for this specific machine is insanely bad, impossible.
Never seen such a behaviour on any tested machine, regardless of powersaving settings.
I still think there is some problem outside of tlp settings for CPU, check this out please:

Not sure if i set everyhting correctly as you said, not really familiar with some concepts here so please feel free to correct.

The idea is to force performance mode on BAT, to check if it’s root of the problem.

The effect i get now is very weird, basically it’s same like x is still laggy, but in idle now CPU usually 3200-4800mHz, and on heavy load (for example 4k video on Firefox) CPU drops to 800mHz.

Not sure what to think here, pretty much CPU seems to do exactly opposite from what it should in terms of reaction for heavier load.

Great idea, especially considering that my problem is direct opposite :grinning:

have you seen if this happens with another browser?
anyhow it seems like something else is going on.

try temporarily disabling TLP and reboot to see if the problem goes away.
sudo systemctl stop tlp
sudo systemctl disable tlp
reboot
and do some tests and see if it behaves better (even if it does not, at the very least it rules out tlp as a cause which is a good possibility)

if not then also considering all the ACPI/BIOS errors, try adding acpi_osi=! to /etc/default/grub

sudo nano /etc/default/grub
add to folowing line like this, leave a single space between each parameter :
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="acpi_osi=! <other parameters>"
CTRL+X, then Y, then ENTER to save
sudo update-grub

also, have you happened to notice if your fans are actually coming on?

please also post output’s after disable tlp/reboot.

Yeah i’ve checked Chromium, it’s unrealted to Firefox specifically, just as example i always conduct different tests, fore example watchnig 4k in vlc, trying 3d, games, window resizing etc.

So, here’s my experience based on your suggestions (chronologically as it was done):

Also i noticed there is this guy who recommends to do this grub stuff before installation of nvidia drivers and also adding acpi_osi=‘Windows 2009’ after acpi_osi=!, what do you think on this?

  1. After reboot i tested and everything again is pretty much same, except:
    1. CPU is all times 800-900mHz like it was before those TLP settings we made, most likely it’s related to 3 so i suppose it’s normal.

    2. Fn buttons to change brightness doesn’t work anymore, i suppose again it’s normal and most likely need to force reinstall video drivers after grub-update, like that video mentions…

    3. sudo journalctl -p 3 -xb reports some CPU throttling again

Now that’s a really good question…
I’d say more no, than yes, but in a sense that this system technically is not going passive at all.

While plugged to AC it’s pretty damn silent most of times, unless you go really really heavy load like playing Hitman on 4k on highest settings, or 3D modeling - than it will go like airplane pretty loud.
I presume that it’s mostly due to CPU switching to turbo mode which is 6 cores 4800mHz, hence pretty reasonable to hear it loud.

While battery i don’t really hear it whatever i do, under heavy load too (which is probably connected to CPU going low to 800-900mHz on heavy load), but it’s definately working, coz if it wouldn’t be, than core i9 + Quadro P5200 would definately fry myself with this workstation in split second, as you can imagine)))

Not much actually, i’ve noticed there was a minor bios update from my installed version, so i thought maybe it will clear some of those ACPI issues, i did update and throttling goes away i’ve checked a lot, but then after i did 5. 3) it appeared again last time i checked.

But for that model throttling is not a huge issue, basically it can occur very rarely with turbo-boost, coz well…that’s really a lot of power for portable machine.
People on notebookreview forums usaully just bump down core voltage a little to overcome this & then stress-test to stable doublecheck.

That’s good idea actually, what’s the best way to go in Linux on OS level for this?

This machine’s BIOS is locked in terms of voltage change, on Windows people usually use some Intel overclock utility, which obviously proprietary and unavailable for Linux.

I wish I could answer that question, but since I’m using Linux recently, I’m not up to it. I could give you instructions to solve it on the physical level, but you certainly do not want that.

@keybreak , this is likely what caused your function keys to stop working so if its serves no helpful purpose you can remove it and again sudo update-grub you can also try adding both of these
acpi_osi=! acpi_osi="Windows 2015"
or just
acpi_osi="Windows 2015"

fans are not the only way of preventing overheating, if for some reason on battery your fans are just not coming on then throttling or lower power state resulting in crap performance is what’s to come.

Change the SATA Mode from the default “RAID” to “AHCI”. This will allow Linux to detect the NVME SSD.

also, see if disabling the speedboost or speedstep in bios allows for better performance on battery, while your there check to see if there is any battery/power management settings that could be causing it to happen.

here is a kernel parameter used instead of the acpi_osi parameters that dont cause the same issues as acpi_osi do.
acpi_rev_override=1

Ok, so i’ve tryed acpi_osi=! acpi_osi='Windows 2015', then force updated video-drivers + tryed to force prefer maximum power in nvidia driver - still pretty much the same.

True. Probably this could be the case, since fans are clearly working, but doesn’t really go full-on on heavy load while on battery…Though still that’s way too much for throttle, usuallly throttle results for something like CPU saying: ok i’ve tried 4800mHz, can’t really do this going down to 3200mHz or 2000mHz, but constant 800mHz?

I haven’t seen any machine in my whole life that would throttle that hard, plus this machine on Ubuntu and Win 10 doesn’t really do this on battery (i bet i would noticed, since it’s very obvious)

In my previous experiences with other computers, this should effectively force CPU to go full frequency only, but here it’s still switching between multipliers and voltages, just disalllow CPU to turbo-boost (which is very weird, since BIOS have separate seetting for disabling turbo-boost)

I don’t know about what else in BIOS man, there is some possibly questionable stuff could cause ACPI errors, but like i said this BIOS is huuuuuuge and full of stuff, here’s what my probable list:
WWAN/GPS/BLUETOOTH - all of those i disabled (as you probably noticed from other thread there was some errors from those, i just disabled them since i don’t use anyways)
Fastboot = Minimal
Absolute
Docks
Thunderbolt (a looooot of thundebolt stuff)

Before i do this, is there any way to reset all tlp settings to defaults for this machine?

P.S. Also you know, i’ve noticed at some point, watching CPU-X speed / voltage / temp, basically now with all those tlp settings enforcing power, on idle speed is modrate like 2000-3200mHz, temps are like 50-60, voltage is something like 1.3v, but when i let’s say resize terminal window or something that hardly can be called heavy load like 4k video / game - not only speed drops, but voltage is never going over 0.7v…
So probably voltage related more than ‘steps’ or any stuff like that.

Also i’ve noticed there’s some PCI stuff in tlpui could it be that also it bottlenecks link of GPU and causes such behaviour?

yes, uninstall tlp and also delete /etc/default/tlp and then re-install tlp. (you may need to sudo systemctl enable tlp)

see how it goes, cpupower (in repo) is what i use to keep in performance mode consistently on batt or ac and it’s worked well.

did you notice the part on one of those links about sensors and how to get them to read accurately, might be worth a look. you could also see if its an issue if your not able to read the sensor/temp output.

also i think the settings you made on tlp were good except for maybe 1 that i noticed

im asuming should be 1 to make it persistent. either way i think cpupower is worth a look since it seems to keep whatever i set it to, it uses intel_pstate to set frequency. after you install cpupower just

i just noticed i have tlp enabled (thought i had it disabled) and cpupower overrides any settings of tlp and also runs as a service so it’s settings stick regardless. it also allows for boost so you wont have to cripple your very nice processor by disabling boost in bios. i do think fastboot should be disabled iirc has caused issues with others (may be wrong).

and also like you, i noticed that setting tlp to performance across the board actually didnt keep it steadily both on ac and batt.

Seems to me like it’s daemon extending/overriding some functionality of tlp, but now i’m pretty damn sure that tlp has nothing to do with my issue, and here’s why:

  1. So i reinstalled / reseted tlp settings, tried GRUB’s acpi_rev_override=1 (it’s only active option now)
    After reboot nothing really changed, even ACPI errors stayed pretty much same:

  1. Logically i thought that it’s a good idea to try and actually exclude CPU itself, for reasons:
    1. All the problems on battery visibly seems to be connected only to graphics: resizing windows / heavy load / games / video / firefox pages scrolling lags etc

    2. I’ve noticed that even plugged to AC when you watch 4k video on VLC, CPU can go as low as 800mHz (coz it’s not really using it, VLC seems to use GPU acceleration), meanwhile nothing at all lags like on battery.

    3. If in same session you will go battery, and then connect A/C back and try to play Hitman will still lag like s^^t, unlike if you just use ac. Plus on resizing windows there is some noticeable mild tearing (not the case when just AC).

      That effectively means there is most likely some trouble with video on battery and after switching back from battery. And not CPU i must add, because CPU behaves as it should according to other tests and monitoring frequency / voltage / temp, after going back to AC.

    4. Those are pretty alarming, though i’m not really sure what the hell exactly it is:

  2. So i went and streestest only CPU to confirm with good old mprime:
    1. Even on default tlp (which as we know for me is powersaving) under stress CPU vary from 1300-2900mHz (which is perfectly normal for tlp defaults to not use turbo, without turbo this CPU max is 2900mHz)
    2. Voltage changes according with frequency (means it can go higher than 0.7V, before on heavy load as i’ve said above it doesn’t ever go higher than 0.7V)
  3. That means that CPU is perfectly capable to make it’s CPU only job also on battery.
  4. But if you try to make anything slightest graphics related (for example resize terminal window, while stresstest and CPU currentrly let’s say 2600mHz and ~1.3V)…
    While you resize CPU immideately drops to 800mHz and doesn’t go higher than 0.7V, until you stop resizing and then it will rise to normal stress-test values again.

Only theory i have except those shipload of errors possibly somehow affecting this…
Is that Manjaro for some reason assumes that this is laptop and it have some kind of optimus / hybrid graphics, where in reality it’s not, and it have only Quadro P52000 and video-nvidia.

So when CPU tries to make his intel-job :joy: without intel’s video presence it just failes miserably…

Sounds crazy, but my general experience can only suggest something like that, otherwise it’s some Linux voodoo-magic which i’m totally unaware of…

P.S. Also under stresstest there was significatly more noticeable fan noise, but not as loud as when you game on AC (which also indicates that mostly fans go really high rpm and loud on heavy videocard load) and on battery it doesn’t seem to be a case.

oh, i thought you mentioned previously you just had the integrated gpu disabled. hmmm… still looks like your getting thermal throttling though.

check if acpi daemon is running/errors
systemctl status acpid
if not, enable,reboot, see if acpi errors are gone at least. you have alot of them so getting that taken care of may solve other issues at the same time?? regardless, its a problem so solve it :sunglasses:.

also can you post:

did you happen to do any modifications to video drivers, configurations? have you tried uninstalling video drivers, deleting related configurations in mhwd.d and xorg.conf.d and reinstalling with

thats not that abnormal, at least they are coming on. what you should be looking for during stress testing is at what temp do the fans kick on. this was the reason i was referring to the thermal parts of those wiki’s i linked, not just so you could see the temps but more so that your system can read them. i would have to re-read to try and explain better.

and i still think using cpupower to set mode to performance instead of messing with TLP is a better option, it sets performance but also prevents your cpu from dropping into low low power states which would still have a negative effect on things using the nvidia gpu. not to mention it only takes a minute or two to install/enable/set performance. you wont even need to reboot as changes are instant.

as much as it seems computers have attitudes and are out to get us :scream:. they’re not. :disappointed:.

note: editing out the thermal throttling from logs does not make it go away :grin:.

Sure you’re correct.
It was just insane assumption of probably Manjaro’s faulty behaviour based on nothing but lack of assumptions)

And actually i’m really happy for this, specifically targeted machine without any kind of switching, coz i’m done with hybrid / optimus driver problems, it was never good, on any os)

Not sure, i believe mprime ruled this out at least for CPU part.
Since CPU clearly can take only CPU heavy load, can go higher on voltage side, can work with higher temperatures, fans are noticeably louder etc.

Problems starts on any graphically related load on battery, and after switching from battery to plugged back.

btw, how about that theory: probably videocard tries to do it’s thing and for some reason doesn’t send signal to fans go more active, and when that happens it also triggers CPU to go lower, since cooling system is interconnected?

Seems it was disabled, wonder why in the first place.

Not since Manjaro KDE clean installation, i’ve tried absolutely clean, checked.
Then only applied sudo nvidia-settings of resolution and refresh rate, Save to X configuration file of /etc/X11/mhwd.d/nvidia.conf (i made diff to see changes, only refresh rate changed).

Drivers was latest proprietary video-nvidia out of the box, after updates it’s v415.27.

Both with throttling errors and without, since i’ve just figured it’s not actual in-session throttling reported by
sudo journalctl -p 3 -xb
It’s boottime under bios self-test, since i launch it immideately after boot (and no matter how hard i load it with gaming or other stuff in session - it doesn’t add additional entries of throttling warnings).

On battery there are none throttling logs in there ever, and on AC there are (obviously since it can go turbo very high, and without bumping voltages down a little this machine can potentially throttle just a bit)

i started thinking i confused your old thread with this one but then i realized i didnt have your old thread open anymore. maybe its my eyes playing tricks on me :sweat:. and now they are back :scream::face_with_head_bandage:

def worth a try considering finding model specific wiki’s/threads for your model, the next best thing would be something similar that is known for having similar problems. its nothing that cant be reversed.

So i was reading a lot of stuff considering DELLs in arch / Manjaro…
Considering temps from this article:

  1. lm_sensors installed on Manjaro by default, sensors command gave pretty reasonable results:
    dell_smm-virtual-0 for my model by default shows fan1 / fan2 rpm which is accurate since my model have huge cooler with 2 fans, kinda like MAX-Q modern designs, but more efficient.

  2. i8kctl here i’m really not sure, there’s a lot of packages in aur for this, git. usual, modded etc (you can search it), i’d rather don’t use such driver/hardware related stuff from aur just to make what should work out of the box work, but just for the test i did install git from mentioned here:

    Fan speeds can be monitored with i8kctl from i8kutils-gitAUR. This laptop is not in the supported list so it is necessary to load the i8k kernel module with the force=1 module option.

    Nothing really changed, but i’m not sure how to properly load i8k with force=1

  3. Did modinfo dell-smm-hwmon | grep ‘^description’, got output as in wiki:

  4. Just in case did modprobe dell-smm-hwmon ignore_dmi=1 to force load

  5. I do not see anything like this:

  1. First of all i’ve noticed that Manjaro comes out of the box with it)))
  2. I did sudo cpupower frequency-set -g performance
  3. It really forced CPU frequency / voltage to the top, though temps is pretty normal :slight_smile: 50-60
  4. Tested battery…Well maybe a little bit smoother & little bit harder to force it to go 800mHz / 0.7V, but still it clearly behaves in same fasion, Firefox’s start page of Manjaro lags on scroll and stuff like that, game / 3d also, still have tearing on Battery with resizing windows, also after switching from battery to ac, and until reboot video will be more laggy than on clean AC session.

Who would disagree :slight_smile: Problem is that there’s no new Precision articles…for pretty obvious reason)
Closest findable articles so far would be new XPS, hardware is closest…

Now i’ve tried adding one by one, update, then reboot test, and my current grub is:

Through this process sadly nothing at all changed in terms of errors / performance.
I hoped that at least scsi_mod.use_blk_mq=1 would get rid of this

There’s also this acpi_osi=Linux i haven’t tried, but after reading this i’m not really sure if it safe / worth apply:

Haven’t focused on spectre/meltdown on Linux yet, need more digging.
I know pretty lot from Windows side of things - i always turned all of this patches off, since on Windows they were even more security holes, than problem itself, performance was really heavily down first month, then things get better in CPU side of things, and most people start to say that it’s pretty safe performancewise now and you should use it without looking back…

But CPU is not the only part of computer, so that’s horsesh^t)
For example, there are some SSDs models like some samsungs, which have 50-70% decrease in R/W performance when this patches enabled.

So in general my advice would be definately disable this spectre/meltdown patches on any gaminge / production machine, where you really need to have performance and don’t want to tear down hardware like some SSDs.

But if you’re superparanoid, or on server-side of things…Well maybe worth enabling )

And again, haven’t tested this in Linux so :slight_smile:
