Dell G5 black screen on wake up

Hello Guys,
I have Dell G5 with the configuration below and quite often when I wake it up the screen remains black. Some times I even here system sound when new notification pops up, but that’s about it. Can’t do anything else other than hard power off. Don’t know what causes it as I’ve had my share of issues with the nvidia and external monitors. I’m moving around quite a lot, so I’m using about 4 different external monitors. I’m switching between power save and performance modes. I’ve looked into the journalctl and this error stood out. I see it every time in journal when it fails to wake up.

lis 09 19:47:59 Haven gsd-power[3117]: Error setting property 'PowerSaveMode' on interface org.gnome.Mutter.DisplayConfig: Timeout was reached (g-io-error-quark, 24)

I’ve looked around quite a bit, but haven’t really found a solution.

Any help much appreciated!

At least I can say that you BIOS/UEFI is outdated by ~3 years: https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=kwt0k&oscode=wt64a&productcode=g-series-15-5590-laptop

No idea what is causing your “blackscreen”, but I suspect it’s because you set an external monitor to primary, then go to standby and when you wake up the laptop without a monitor, then the external monitor is still registered there, more like a ghost. So in that case: don’t set the external Monitor to primary.

In addition, since I suspect the external Monitor is connected to the nvidia card, the nvidia module gets unloaded on suspend, a modesetting (i915 here) driver does not. That means: It suspends, the state of the modeseetings driver is freezed, but nvidia is unloaded. When you do a prime-reverse, then it needs the nvidia module loaded to get a picture of the laptop screen. Hopefully that is understandable.

Prime-reverse: nvidia → external monitor; nvidia → passthrough picture to internal laptop screen

Unfortunately no, I’ve been suspecting the external monitors, so I’ve tried on several occasions to disconnect the monitor, waited for OS to finish up all the switching and re-aranging the windows and then suspend the ntb and upon wake up, it froze anyway.

@lfs well, just disconnecting will not do the job. Even if you disconnect the monitor, the nvidia driver is still the main one. You need to plug off the the monitor and switch to the integrated intel gpu, logout and login again and then suspend. Yeah I know, that it stupid, but it is what it is. Nvidia has limited support here. If nvidia would be the only one here, then that wouldn’t be a problem, that means: the nvidia card is directly connected to the laptop screen.

The situation that you’re describing is that the Nvidia runs as primary gpu, right? Then I’m not sure we’re on the same page here. I’m using hybrid drivers with intel as main GPU and using prime-run to run apps that I want to run on nvidia. The HDMI and DP ports are hardwired to nvidia, so when the monitors are plugged in intel is doing the computing and it should only pass through (or sink or whatever it’s called.) the nvidia to DP/HDMI.

Yes, that is the default setup. Usually when proprietary nvidia module is installed, you won’t have access to its outputs. Only if you switch.

Yes, but the eDP connection is usually hardwired to the iGPU and not to the dGPU.

Nope, it is the other way around. Since DP/HDMI is hardwired to the dGPU, nvidia does the computing and pass the picture through the CPU to the iGPU and Intel just displays it on the screen. Since no direct connection and nvidia is not capable of “multi screen” in modesetting mode, there is no other way.
