Dell G5 5505 Distorted image after resuming with amdgpu

This issue has been there for quite a long time but got a lot worse with the last update.

After resume the screen shows a completely distorted image with lots of noise like with bad analog TV reception back in the days. The computer still reponds normally besides the distorted image. I usually log on on a console and reboot. Image becomes normal again once the bios re-initializes the GPU. No power off necessary.

Previously this happened kind random. Sometimes not for weeks, sometimes two days in a row. Now it happens every 2nd or 3rd resume.

Another issue: I can only suspend once after a reboot with open LID. After the first resume, I always need to close the lid. This is annoying but not the real issue.

Hibernation or suspend ?

You could also test if rebooting user space is enough.

systemctl soft-reboot

Please provide the link you get in response to the following command

inxi -Fxxxzc0 | curl -F'file=@-' https://0x0.st

S3 Suspend

I’ll try the soft-reboot next time

In your quest for a solution did you see this ?

https://www.dell.com/community/en/conversations/linux-general/dell-g5-se-5505-freeze-suspend-fans/647f9ba5f4ccf8a8def9627a

I don’t know if it is applicable in your context - seems like a general issue with that model ?

On my system S3 is enabled, therefore suspend works well in general. Just the issue with the distorted image. Strangely after posting this it stopped happening every 2nd to 3rd sleep. So I haven’t tried the soft-reboot yet.

Besides that issue and a terrible runtime on battery it is fine.

Strange thing: Since I posted this, I did not have a single issue. Seems my system fears the solution
