Dell 5480 with Manjaro refuses to open applications like gparted, rpi-imager, ufw

Hallo Manjaro users,

On my Dell 5480 with Manjaro Cinnamon installed, specific programs refuse to show up
gparted, rpi-imager, ufw,the users&groups tool
I do try to initiate from the menu. No one shows up

The Software Update tool can be launched from the menu bar. To process updates.
It keeps “busy with preparing” (In dutch : Bezig met voorbereiden). The tool cannot be stopped by clicking the x.

Programs which do show up are gnome terminal, double commander, nemo, geany, gimp.

My impression is, also based on my other topics launched recently, that Manjaro becomes instable. I hope it is only going on my two laptop computers, running Manjaro Cinnamon.

My hope is that our forum heros can help me out.

Thanks in advance from Hans

If a program doesn’t start using the menu - and you get no feedback as to what the cause may be,
launch it from a terminal and examine the output.

cinnamon-settings
cinnamon-settings-users (that is the users & groups tool)
gparted

I do not know the name of the binary for rpi-imager - it likely is just that.

You can right click the menu entry and get a context menu where one of the items is “Settings” or “Properties” or something like that.
(my system isn’t in english, neither is yours, apparently)
From there you can see the name of the binary that is supposed to be launched.

When posting command output, prepend the command with LC_ALL=C

for example:
LC_ALL=C cinnamon-settings

so everyone can read and understand.

ps:
it’s likely this polkit issue @Teo just mentioned - all these commands require authentication before they launch

Change the kernel to a newer as a first measure, at least 6.6 better 6.12 This is the polkit situation that affects you.
And always read the announcements and do not forget you are running a community edition which is not official.

I am thinking polkit - which has issues with kernels < 6.6?

I suggest you use a newer kernel

sudo mhwd-kernel -i linux618 rmc

The common denominator between those programs is indeed they need root rights and use pkexec ergo polkit. It can be seen in the provided ps output too.

Hallo,

Thanks for the advices.

I learned to use LC_ALL=C. Added it to my manual how to use the manjaro forum. Great !

About “commands require authentication before they launch” : that question should show up. I am used to and aware of it. But no request to authenticate …

About

  1. “This is the polkit situation that affects you”. => What is "polkit ?
  2. "Change the kernel to a newer as a first measure, at least 6.6 better 6.12 This is the polkit situation that affects you. => Studying on it now. Investigating the kernel status and advice around it. I will try to install the newer kernel 6.6 better 6.12.
  3. And always read the announcements.
  4. Do not forget you are running a community edition which is not official." => I am not aware of this. community edition of what ? The current kernel ? How to recognize ?

If output is desired here, I will add it.

Learning / studying on
sudo mhwd-kernel -i linux618 rmc

I learned (Using DuckAI, yes) that I can manage the kernels in Linux Manjaro with the " Manjaro Settings Manager". Here i can see that 6.18.4-1 is the latest (non experimental) kernel. And also that my current kernel is 6.1.159-1, LTS, Active, Installed, and Advised.

I now also understand the sudo mhwd-kernel -i linux618 rmc. So I will use that one. Now.

Have killed the command mhwd-kernel -i linux618 rmc
No difference visible in /boot. Still the old kernel.
Will be back soon.

Thanks so far :waving_hand:

When you launch
cinnamon-settings-users
or gparted or some other program in your list
they all require admin privileges in order to work.

Polkit is what asks for this, what triggers an authentication dialog.

When that doesn’t work, the program will not start.

as @Teo said:

Install a newer kernel - like 66 or 612 or newer.
There this issue (apparently) doesn’t exist.

That was what was suggested.
Easy to do.

Just install and then boot a newer kernel
and see whether your issue persists.

But maybe there is a different problem here:

LC_ALL=C cinnamon-settings

This shouldn’t result in a segmentation fault - it requires no admin permission and should definitely work flawlessly!

The fact that you documented here that it doesn’t work
but crashes instead
points to a different problem.

This is what I see when I use the same command:

LC_ALL=C cinnamon-settings
Using pam module (python3-pampy)

and then the System Settings window appears

To be clear:
I have no idea where to look to explain this difference between your system and mine,
why the program would crash for you, but work for me.
