Darktable stopped working (from repos)

I can’t exactly know when did happen, for ther hace been two so bussy monthes that I have not played with photo in that time, but darktable, from repos, has stopped working. It just don’t starts any graphic window, nor says nothing when invoked from command line (no error sign, nothing… just stays still as initing till Ctrl^C is invoked, or a new instance tris to be started, and them says the typical message about a lock file present that has to be deleted… but when done, nothing again.

The ones from snap and flatpack do work, but I don’t like using snaps or flatpacks, and also they are not standard in place to keep config, and so. For that i would rather avoid them.

Downgrade does not work, for going to previous 4.2.1.x have the same failure. And 4.2.0.x have dependencies that are not found in pamac, or incompatible with another updates (ffmpeg, for example), so I don’t want to mess with that.

Renaming the .config/darktable folder to start a clean instance also do not work (exactly the same problem)

Any clue? I know there is not much info there to start, but there is absolutely no feedback when startting int from command line, so, not much more I cn say by now.

Probably again opencl? Probably these packages: intel-compute-runtime and intel-graphics-compiler. Perhaps Manjaro has newer libraries, which cause problems with darktable now.

I will investigate this. But I don’t feel like that… Deleting the config folder should initiate darktable without opencl
Anyway, will try some things on that direcion and will tell.

I also just check mine, and it also don’t work.

At first, I get the following error at starting it in the Terminal and deleting the database after the prompt, just asking again at restart.
After reinstall darktable the Terminal just IDL and gives no output.

intel-compute-runtime and intel-graphics-compiler is also not on my PC.

Mh… ok. I saw that I have installed already. Started it, no issue, but I am on unstable branch. Btw. opencl is enabled by default, so it seems, because there is a --disable-opencl parameter.

Try this:

darktable --disable-opencl

On VM with Manjaro on the stable branch it works also normally. :man_shrugging: Must be something very specific.

You’re right!
Starting with --disable-opencl makes the trick, and opens without problems. By now that’s enough, though there are interesting modules I use often than become extremely slow without opencl.
I was convinced that it will start without opencl in clean start (it was so time ago, but probably it changed), but so that darktable-cltest give information that opencl is ok and working on my computer, it tries ro use it anyway if noy specifically avoided.

I’ll have to check what has being upgraded related to opencl, but knowing that it works for you in unstable, it will probably get solved in future upgrades again, if unable to find it now.

What kernel are you in, just to check that?

I’ve been trying different things, and downgrading different packages (not much, no to make system unstable), but can’t find what can be modified or upgraded, darktable only opens with --disable-opencl
If anyone has another idea, it will be welcome!

And acording to darktable info, all the chain seem fine (and was working a couple of monthes ago):

So, I have no clue…

I don’t have that one installed. I did a quick install et viola it doesn’t run. So I conclude that darktable cannot use it and stuck somehow.

Probably use intel-compute-runtime instead. :man_shrugging:

Now darktable-cltest doesn’t stop so soon as before. Now it asked for gdb to be installed. I did so. And then darktable-cltest runs much further, but then segfaults.

Solved!!!
I had to reinstall some packages (all opencl ones, nvidia ones, darktable, and some other ones just in case) and now darktable is uo and running with opencl again!!

If you read along, perhaps that can help you. I had to uninstall the intel-oneapi* packages that were on my system (not sure one) and install the intel-compute, and also install gdb, and reinstall some nvidia and opencl packages, and now everything is working again.
