Dark appearance of some applications broken after update

(Dark or Light refer to text background.)

Using Manjaro 24.0.6.

I like Dark. In Settings > Appearance, I have selected Dark and it generally works.

During update, I approved “To remove adw-gtk3 5.3.1 (Conflicts With> adw-gtk-theme)”.

Now Claws Mail (from Manjaro distribution) is light.

Also Gthumb, Cheese are light. They were all dark before.

Undoing the upgrade solves the problem. Something changed in Manjaro (including Claws Mail) that broke dark appearance in Claws Mail.

In Claws mail preferences, I could not find anything useful.

How to restore Deark appearance of Claws Mail?

It is how it is

Without any recent Gnome knowledge - I venture a guess.

You need a theme that supports gtk3 and gtk4

Theck your ~/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini - ensure it points to a valid installed theme.

I have this, it looks good to me:

% cat '/home/alba/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini'
[Settings]
gtk-application-prefer-dark-theme=0

Most applications (Google Chrome, Nautilus, Skype, Terminal) are Dark but a few are not. Probably a mismatch in GTK ressources. Claws Mail is critical for me because I use it very often.

The adw-gtk3 package is now called adw-gtk-theme which replaces the old adw-gtk-theme. I know it’s a little confusing.

With that change, you may need to set Legacy Applications to Adw-gtk3-dark in the Tweaks application under Appearance. It may have been set to the now removed Adw-dark previously.

Tweaks > Appearance > Legacy Applications : Adwaita-dark works for Claws Mails, Emacs, Gthumb, after application restart, thank you.

Ah… you missed the point. Adwaita-dark has nothing to do with the subject of this thread.
