Crash with nvidia proprietary driver, but mouse moves

I did a fresh install yesterday (May 14, 2024), and everything went fine with nouveau. But if I install proprietary nvidia drivers (or hybrid), the system constantly crashes either during boot, on the login screen or soon after login. In the last two cases, the mouse still moves on screen, but nothing else responds.

I have no idea how to fix this. For now I can only use my notebook with nouveau. I appreciate any help because I need CUDA working on this notebook.

My notebook is a Dell G15 5030 with intel i7-13650HX and dual VGA:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Raptor Lake-S UHD Graphics [8086:a78b] (rev 04)

	Kernel driver in use: nouveau

Here’s the output of inxi -G:

to force the reinstallation of the propietary driver use

sudo mhwd -f -i pci video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-prime

and btw. please post the full output of the inxi, without proper information what gui (plasma, gnome etc… ) and all the other informations it’s impossible to give assistance and help.
post the full output, use minimum

inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width

or

inxi --admin --verbosity=8 --filter --no-host --width

it will filter all privacy informations and gives an overview

I already tried this force reinstall. It does not solve the problem. If I use the proprietary driver, I get crashes.

But I’ll try again now just to be sure. I’ll reply again in a few of minutes.

I just tried the video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-prime again, and it crashed after reboot during the boot first, and on a second try it crashed after login.

Now I removed the proprietary driver and I’m back on nouveau.

Here’s the output of inxi --admin --verbosity=8 --filter --no-host --width:

I’ve also tested with video-nvidia instead of video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-prime and I get the same result… it crashes during boot, login screen or soon after login, but the mouse still moves.

i’m on plasma not on gnome but i think i know why it crashes. it’s not the installation of the driver but gnome want’s to use wayland instead of x11 as default and that doesn’t end up well. check how to install and use x11 on gnome. that should do the job.

But I am using X11…

$ echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE
x11

And on /etc/gdm/custom.conf I use WaylandEnable=false.

okay let’s try something. install envycontrol first

pamac install envycontrol

open a console and force reinstallation of the propietary driver first

sudo mhwd -f -i pci video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-prime

after installation run

sudo envycontrol -s nvidia

and reboot

keep in mind that envycontrol has much more options as choosing the displaymanager etc…
run

envycontrol

shows all options but fingers crossed switching simply to nvidia with envycontrol will do the job

It didn’t work… it crashed soon after the login. I’m back on nouveau.

It’s getting late here and I have to work early tomorrow. I’ll continue tomorrow, thanks for the help for now!

Tomorrow I’ll switch back to wayland and try the proprietary drivers with wayland again. I’m almost sure I’ve already tried this, but I’m getting crazy here… so let’s test again to be sure.

Indeed, even the live USB failed with proprietary drivers and I had to install using nouveau.

Let me know if I should post some log output here.

I’ve just found these discussion now. The issue seems to match mine and it is the same video card that I have here.

I’ll try the solution from there later today (now I’m working). The solution there by @brahma was:

and add this ibt parameter:
nano /etc/default/grub
and inside this line: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT inside the quotes add this parameter:
ibt=off
dont remove anything, just add it to existing parameters, save the file with ctrl+x , update grub:
update-grub

the ibt issue should have been already fixed upstream… you are using kernel 6.9 which have issues with nvidia, at least on the testing branch… there is an possible fix for it in the latest testing updates topic…

Thanks for the quick reply. Indeed the ibt=off option didn’t work. Just to register here, the problem persists with wayland, and on the iso/usb live boot with both gnome and kde versions.

If it is a problem with the 6.9 kernel, what should I do? Downgrade to 6.8? Or stick to nouveau for a while until this is fixed? Any idea how long would it take?

I’ve read the discussion there in the testing announcements (to use nvidia-drm.fbdev=1 and etc), and it also didn’t work for me.

I might try to downgrade the kernel later today.

Ok. I got curious and decided to stop working and keep testing it!

I’ve downgraded to kernel 6.8.9-3 and it seems to be working perfectly now!

Thanks for the help!

It actually crashed just now. I’ve been working for 5 hours with the proprietary drivers working fine, and suddenly that same crash again.

I’ll just go back to nouveau for a while and keep an eye on the testing/stable announcements.

In case it helps, here’s the journalctl output of the crash:

Why not using LTS 6.6?

I’ll try tomorrow. I did a fresh install and it comes with 6.9. I got the problems and decided to try do downgrade one level back to 6.8. But, indeed, I should try the LTS version.

Up to now, everything seems to be holding fine on the kernel 6.6.

If I get a crash again, I’ll post here.

For now, thanks for the help!
