Constant Freezing, and Reboot

Seemingly random. My PC will work fine for a few hours, and other times only for a few minutes. Typically I first notice problems when my mouse starts lagging, and then everything freezes. No mouse or keyboard, and then my system reboots itself. Doesn’t matter what I’m doing either. Sometimes I’m just browsing the internet. I’ve read other posts about similar issues. Nothing seemed to work for me. System Monitor showed nothing abnormal. CPU was at 2%, and ram was at 2GB out of 16GB.

This is a fresh install, as in 2 days ago from Windows 11. Although this is not the first time I’ve tried to run Linux on this machine. 2 years ago I tried, and had the same issues. I gave up, and went back to Windows. I’ve had zero issues on Windows, so I really don’t think its a hardware issue. I did find some system error logs indicating that, and I’ll post them here. Along with my system specs. Wasn’t sure what all information someone would need, let me know what I did wrong. I’ll do what I can to fix it, thanks in advance.

Did you try another kernel already ?

  • 5.10, 5.16, 5.17rc

Did you try to disable apparmor ?

Yes, changing kernels had no effect. I’ll disable apparmor, and let you know what happens thx.

No change with apparmor disabled. Still freezing, and rebooting.

Sometimes updating bios will do magic things, especially with amd as they fix problems quit often.
so that is worth a shot it might fix your hardware issues. That windows works fine doesn’t mean much in this case as Linux is totally different

Well I updated bios, and am now running 5.17rc kernel, I’ll see how it goes from here. Slightly off topic question though. Why would bad hardware run fine on windows specifically? Looser parameters maybe? It’s probably outside my realm of understanding though.

You have no swap partition or swap file.

Wow, that never even crossed my mind. Figured the installer would cover that. Maybe it’s because I have 2 storage drives, and the installer just missed it? Thanks, I created a swap partition, and activated it. I’ll see if If the issue comes back. I’ve got high hopes now though.

I am using the same generation of AMD like your hardware, but the different Mainboard.
I knew this problem in the past, but it was too general. But so far, my hardware is running stable and smoothly after the fixing problem.

This issue is probably related to lower frequency of RAM.

  • Try to optimize the default frequency of RAM, like XMP or DOCP in BIOS.

OR

  • (Turn off PBO in BIOS )

  • Try Linux Kernel 5.16

I didn’t implied bad hardware, the point is how well that hardware is supported. that may differ from windows to Linux
I had for example a card reader that works fine under Windows but didn’t on Linux. Updating the firmware fixed it on Linux

Did you make a manual partitioning ?

When I was researching a solution to my problem I came across several posts from people with very similar hardware to me. I noticed when I flashed my bios it reset most of my settings in bios. It still ended up crashing though. Created a swap partition, which should have been there anyway seemed to fix it for me. I went back into bios, and have since enabled pbo, and xmb again. No issues so far.

No, and when I went into my partition manager I noticed I also had 2 unused partitions. One was for 1mb, and the other for 2mb. The root partition, and the efi boot partition were made correctly by the installer. Not sure why the swap partition wasn’t made or why it made 2 unused partitions. Possibly a bug or a bad iso not sure really.

That is already known, but not a bug. There are some reasons in search engine.
