Colors on laptop display changed after update

Hello. After the last update my laptop display shows all colors too intense with an orange tint. I’ve tried to turn on/off night color, disable color profiles, change refresh rate, reduce brightness but the problem persists. Is it some driver problem?

Strange - could be caused by a custom theme - is it the same with the default breeze or breath theme?

With AMD graphics, the graphics driver is part of the kernel as it comes from upstream.

You’re running the 6.13 kernel. I would advise you to stick to an LTS kernel, such as 6.6 or 6.12, and see whether they too exhibit the discoloration.

I am running Linux 6.14 - no strange appearance with my custom theme - on neither of the two AMD systems I use (laptop and workstation).

Linux 6.13 will soon be EOL - as 6.14 has been officially released on kernel.org

I’m afraid it’s the same, I’ve tried two other themes and seems to be some driver issue.

Ok, I’ll try another kernel to see if that solves the problem.

I’ve just tried both 6.12 and 6.6 and the problem is still there. :worried:

Silly question perhaps, but do you also experience any discoloration when entering the UEFI settings? If so, then it’s not an OS issue but a monitor calibration issue.

The colors on the UEFI screen are normal as usual.

Then I suspect it was the update to mesa that did it.

I’ll post a link to this thread on the Stable Updates thread.

I’ve read some of the posts there and there’s someone that switched to x11 citing plasma and wayland not being a good match. Switching to x11 did nothing for me, I’ll keep on eye on that chat to see some possible solution in the future. As you said, something must have happened to mesa. I don’t know if rolling back to a previous version of mesa is advisable; I’m no expert, just some guy who likes open software and works with graphics. Meanwhile, is there any software than can help me change the tint or color saturation of the screen?

I feel tempted to switch to 6.14 but it’s still rc on Manjaro, so to avoid any glitches in performance I’ll stick to official distro releases. Perhaps it will be official in a week or so. I hope it solves the color problem of my display.

I used the 6.14 kernel full-time on my AMD machine from the day RC1 reached the repos. Didn’t experience any issues at all with it. Give it a try - you can always switch back to a LTS kernel if it doesn’t work for you. The version of linux614 currently in Stable branch, 6.14.0rc7-1, was the final release candidate before 6.14.0-1 was officially released.

mbn can be found in the manjaro-check-repos package

Have you tried booting into a live ISO? This way you could make sure it’s not harware linked issue.

That’s not true — quite the opposite, actually. The KDE developers are putting most of their effort into the Plasma/Wayland combination.

What has historically not been a good match so far is the combination of Wayland and Nvidia graphics, and this is entirely due to Nvidia’s unwillingness to open up their source code.

I did what you suggested with 2 versions, 24.2.1 and 24.2.0. The older version worked for me, the usual colors came back. It might be some new driver issue. Do I have to install the older ISO and stop any updates so this won’t happen again?

Yes. As I said, going back to X11 did nothing. And of course I’ve avoided any Nvidia products because of the reason you cite. I’m fine with Plasma in Manjaro.

This is not a good idea with a rolling release distro like Arch and Manjaro as you would miss not only bug fixes but also all safety updates.

I guess it will be fixed in some days. I have no idea what package has had a regression causing this for you, if you would know you could temperary downgrade it. My first candidate would be mesa but this is only a wild guess.

Not such a wild guess — I too suspect that it would be mesa.

Note that an updated version of mesa was included in today’s Stable Update.
