Clean install, dual monitors won't work with Thinkpad dock

I’ve been using Manjaro for several years, and finally got around to wiping my laptop clean and starting with a fresh install. I did this because I originally used Gnome for years and around the beginning of the year, I switched to KDE by installing it within the existing install. It’s been working fine, but every once in a while, I’d have odd errors or app crash and startup would show problems with the disk / ext4 corruption. Figured, let’s just start clean, restore my files, and start anew.

I’m running a Thinkpad P52s connected to a Thinkpad dock (Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2; DK1841). The dock supports 2 HDMI or 2 DisplayPort connections - I’m using the two HDMI ports.

Previously, this worked flawlessly. I connected the laptop to the dock, closed the lid, and I would get two monitors working correctly. Open the lid, only the laptop’s built-in display would work.

After the fresh install, I can’t get more than one monitor working. With both plugged into the dock, laptop’s built-in screen freezes and only one monitor works. The message at the top of the display configuration says that all monitors are disabled; enable at least one. If I move my mouse to the far upper-left, it will show the contents of all the windows for a brief moment, then the mouse freezes. Keep wiggling it, it will stutter.

Here’s what I’ve found through troubleshooting it:

  • Connected to the dock, two HDMI monitors connected:
    First monitor activates.
    Second monitor is off.
    Built-in display is frozen.

  • Connected to the dock, one HDMI monitor connected:
    External monitor activates.
    Built-in display operates normally. All is well.

  • Connected to the dock, one HDMI monitor connected to the HDMI output on laptop, only.
    External monitor activates.
    Built-in display operates normally. All is wel.

  • Connected to the dock, one HDMI monitor connected to the HDMI output of laptop, other HDMI connected to Dock:
    (Same as the first entry above)
    First monitor activates (one connected to the HDMI output on side of laptop).
    Second monitor is off.
    Built-in display is frozen.

I’ve tried different versions of the Linux Kernal, and a few trial and errors with the Nvidia driver, to no avail.

The dock has a 135W power supply. Again, this worked before and has for at least the last six years.

Anyone have any suggestions? This screams to me that it’s a video driver issue, but not sure where to look to continue troubleshooting.

According to Nvidia’s driver search tool - the 580xx driver is the recommended driver to support your GPU.

To get the hybrid driver synced to your system

sudo mhwd -i pci video-hybrid-intel-nvidia-580xx-prime

Or you may install the driver manually by using either the kernel specific driver or the nvidia dkms driver (the latter requires kernel headers for the active kernel)

To get your current kernel run the mhwd-kernel command
