Cinnamon-screensaver freezes when monitors switch off

I am a long-time linux user, but a manjaro newbie.
I am running Manjaro pre-installed on a minisforum um700 desktop.

I switched from Plasma to Cinnamon (and am generally extremely happy with Cinnamon).

However I am experiencing an annoying issue with cinnamon-screensaver lockscreen.
If I lock the screen (or the screen locks itself) and the monitors turn off while locked, the screensaver seems to freeze, eg

  • The top half of one of my monitors is black/blank
  • The rest of the monitors shows the open applications as if the sccreen was unlocked
  • I don’t see a field to enter my password
  • The mouse cursor can move, but everything else is locked

I can unfreeze the system by switching to a tty and typing
$ cinnamon-unlock-desktop

However, I’ve had to disable faillock since I was getting 3 failed password attempts (even though I hadn’t typed anything).

I can reproduce this reliably by locking the screen and then manually switching off my screens, but it also happens when powersaving switches them off for me.

I don’t know if it’s relevant, but I run 2 monitors (one on HDMI one on DisplayPort), with different resolutions and one monitor is in portrait mode.

As a quick follow-up I did some more testing and this seems to be specifically happening due to the portrait orientation of my 2nd monitor.
If I orient it landscape the crashes (at least on some quick tests) don’t occur.

Cinnamon is GTK based - KDE/Plasma is Qt based and the UM700 computer is possibly setup to use Wayland.

It is a configuration issue - especially if the monitors is not set to use the same refresh rate.

I had to tinker quite a bit with my monitors to get Plasma to use my monitors correct - even then I have occational issues when monitors goes to sleep - issues which only goes away on logout and relogin.
