Chromium triggers GNOME 'Add Keyboard Shortcuts' dialog

Right around the last [Stable Update] 2025-08-30 (which I did 05/09/25), I noticed that everytime I startup Chromium, it always triggers the GNOME ‘Add Keyboard Shortcuts’ dialog. I assumed I was triggering it myself accidentally somehow and closed it. It kept happening over the last few days though, so I started to look into it.

Turns out it’s a reported issue and even documented in ArchWiki.

In case anyone else is affected I thought I’ll post the temporary solution detailed in the wiki:

  1. Create a file ~/.config/chromium-flags.conf
  2. Add the text --disable-features=GlobalShortcutsPortal
  3. Logout of system & Login again
  4. Chromium should startup now without the Shortcuts dialog :+1:

FYI, it’s been listed in the Known Issues section of Unstable Updates since March.

I’ve had it happening to me here on Plasma as well after the most recent chromium update, but so far it has only happened once.

I (running the ‘stable’ branch) had no idea. I even searched the forum prior to the post for “Add Keyboard Shortcuts” because I had no idea to look for ‘Global Shortcuts’ but unsurprisingly didn’t find anything helpful.

How about adding those ‘Known issues’ to the Stable Updates Wikipost as well, if it’s of concern to those users (like myself)? I for one had no idea and it totally came out of the blue.

That’s a valid point. I’m not really sure if the problem is really linked to the last Stable update because according to pacman.log, three days later there has been an update to chromium on Sep. 8th and I’m not sure when the ‘GlobalShortcuts’ issue started exactly.

[2025-09-08T15:03:37+0200] [ALPM] upgraded chromium (139.0.7258.154-1 -> 140.0.7339.80-1)

on KDE Chromium was working fine until recently,
today i tried launching it and got the ‘system settings’ open on the ‘shortcuts’ page which is under ‘keyboard’.
i would have taken a screenshot, but Spectacle doesn’t work for me under Wayland.

Edit:
maybe i’m doing it wrong, but i tried the solution mentioned in the first post and it doesn’t work for me.
this is what i get in the Terminal:

chromium --disable-features=GlobalShortcutsPortal  ✔

Edit2:
it works fine on X11

Hmm, I’m not very good with analysing the journal but it seems you run into some problems with KDEwallet. Does it maybe require the ‘GlobalShortcutsPortal’ feature and runs into an error when it gets disabled?

I’m running GNOME, so unfortunately I’m not familiar with KDE.

yes ism not using KDEwallet.
the issue started with version 140(i saw other people reporting the same)
since it works on X11 i’m fine with that as i rarely use Chromium,it’s usually when government sites and the sorts require it.
