Change File Type Icons Not Working

Greetings,

I noticed on all my machines, I can’t change icons on any file types.
I am attempting to change STL files to show a custom icon other than a generic image icon.

The problem is that the browser for changing icons suddenly closes when I press the browse button.

I usually right click the STL and go to: Properties, change, and then click the icon on the upper left. The “Select Icon - File Type Editor” window opens. When I click browse (to select my custom icon), it briefly opens and simply just closes out. Can’t get beyond that point.

If anyone else can reproduce this, or found a solution. I’d like to know.
Any insight on this issue is most appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,

I noticed the following recently reported on the EndeavourOS forum:

If this is similar enough to the issue you’re experiencing, it might be a KDE issue; have you searched for any bug reports that meet your description?

As always, system information may be helpful;

System Information:

Output of the following command (formatted according to forum requirements) may be useful for those wishing to help:

inxi --admin --verbosity=8 --filter --no-host --width

Be prepared to provide more information and outputs from other commands when asked.

Regards.

I haven’t tested it on EndeavourOS, but it does seem pretty close. I can’t seem to find a bug report on the tracker. I’m sure it’s a KDE issue, I was curious if anyone else around here found a workaround for the time being.

All I can do is confirm your observations when following your method. However, attacking it from a different perspective seems to work:

System SettingsApps & WindowsDefault ApplicationsFile Associations:

Find the file type. The rest of the procedure is much the same.

After selecting the desired icon, make sure to click OK and then Apply. I needed to close and reopen System Settings, and the change was reflected under File Associations.

For the change to take effect in Dolphin generally, a reboot might be needed.

Regards.

Going through System Settings definitely worked as intended. A reboot was not needed, it simply worked. Perhaps there is indeed a bug when accessing through the properties right click menu.
Must be a KDE issue. While not an exact fix, but a good workaround nonetheless. Big Thanks!

Well, they (KDE) seem to have increased their financial input from donations lately; maybe they will funnel some of that toward extra developers. That would certainly please many of us here.
