Certain AUR packages installed that are preventing further updates

I seem to have wrecked my package manager or at least have certain packages installed that are preventing further updates.

It involves variations of electron and related libraries. I tried excluding certain packages (like ones which are electron based) but I can’t seem to recover.

What can you people make of the traceback below and what else might you ppl suggest I try next? What other information could I provide to help troubleshoot?

I had a similar obstacle in an XFCE virtual machine. Removing outdated Electron versions allowed the update to complete; in my case, electron32.

Using the versions you mentioned, as an example;

sudo pacman -Rns electron28 electron29

Then perform the update; assuming no other complications, this should complete sucessfully.

After that, I’d suggest rebuilding any AUR packages;

pamac update --aur

And (if needed) install the Electron meta-package;

sudo pacman -S electron

…which should install the current Electron version (which incidentally is electron34).

For a starter… community repo is removed so if you do not remove it from the pacman config you won’t be able to update. The fact that it connects to it automatically means you have unsynced bad mirror.

Then, you are using yay to update and rebuild a bunch of aurs at the same time. This is BAD. Because if the version in aur is newer, it will be preferred. So you end up with even more aur.
So very soon (if on stable branch) or not so soon (if on unstable) you will run into such conflict.

Consider either unstable or arch if you a heavy aur user, or learn to properly update manjaro. Because right now you are in a very unsupported state.

The proper way is to update the repo packages first (obviously after you fix your mirror and config…have you read the announcement?).
Like with sudo pacman -Syu and then rebuild aur, like with sudo yay -Sua

This is incredibly unhelpful because before I started my thread, I already scanned and drilled down into several threads with other users reporting similar issues with broken repos and packages but the solutions for those users were not relevant to me, because their problems were with different packages and setups.

I arrived at this winning command based on @stephane’s post. But this is still good and valid in case I need to refer back to it or for anyone else on these forums who are encountering a similar issue with electron.

These are words of wisdom. All of this is new to me. I have evidentlly been misusing yay/pacman to update and manage my repos. I kind of took this for granted for as long as I have been a Manjaro user because everything just kind of worked.

Consider either unstable or arch if you a heavy aur user, or learn to properly update manjaro. Because right now you are in a very unsupported state.

I got a new laptop this year and have been experimenting with NixOS. I have begun managing my packages with Nix expressions and am intending to migrate my desktop thick client to NixOS in the coming weeks. Although if I do end up sticking around with Manjaro any longer, I will use your advice to better manage my repos, @Teo.

I’ve edited your topic title to reflect the actual issue. :wink:

Always update repo packages first. Then see what packages like EOL versions of Electron that were removed from the repos that affect your AUR packages. Remove / rebuild packages from there.

Keep in mind: When one uses AUR packages, one takes on the responsibility of maintaining them.
