CD-ROM not showing in Dolphin

My two internal CD-ROM players stopped being seen by Dolphin. They appear to be functioning properly with the activity light indicating the CD is being read. But the it does not show up under “Removable Devices” like it used to.

When I connect (USB) an external CD-ROM player a KDED message appears and keeps cycling through “USB Device Detected” followed by “USB Device Went Away.”

(I don’t particularly want to use the external CD-ROM drive; I just wanted to see if it would work.)

I’ve tried several things:

sudo mount -t auto /dev/cdrom /mnt
mount: /mnt: fsconfig() failed: /dev/sr0: Can't open blockdev.
dmesg(1) may have more information after failed mount system call.

Here is the (possibly) relevant tail-end of dmesg:

I tried:

sudo mount -t auto /media /mnt
mount: /mnt: fsconfig() failed: /media: Can't lookup blockdev.
dmesg(1) may have more information after failed mount system call

Checked dmesg again and it looked the same as the above segment.
I entered the following in /etc/fstab:

/dev/cdrom /media auto ro,noauto,user,nodev,defaults 0 0

Still no joy.
Then tried:
sudo mount -t auto /dev/cdrom /mnt
and got nothing but the blank command line while system worked. I waited a while before stopping with ^C.

Then I changed /etc/fstab to:

/dev/cdrom /media/cdrom auto ro,noauto,user,nodev,defaults 0 0

Still not working.

I want to return to being able to load a CD in each drive and have them automatically show up in Dolphin under “Removable Devices” so I can see the contents.
Any help greatly appreciated.

I strongly suspect that your optical drives are malfunctioning, and this could be anything from a dirty lens to a faltering spindle motor.

dmesg output → the issue appears to be with the hardware or the connection to your internal drives, not a configuration problem with Dolphin or your system.

Either the discs are no good, dirty/scratched/damaged… try swapping disks, or using known good CD/DVD’s (commercial presses, not burned).

Better still - sort your disks, and rip them ASAP.

Overall, this is going to be your discs failing, your drives failing…

The external drive is constantly getting detected and immediately disconnected in a loop - no idea why, maybe hardware - or maybe just power…

How likely is it that they would both go out at exactly the same time?

I don’t know if this is relevant or not, but over the past couple of days I inspected 37 CDs (they are sequentially numbered) and after the computer slept overnight, yesterday morning neither drive would show up in Dolphin. I have tried several different CDs since, all of the same vintage and burn.

Well, it could be the one thing they have in common, i.e. the power supply. Voltage too low on the rail(s) going to those optical drives, and you may already get error messages in dmesg when trying to use them.

I like your thinking in “the one thing they have in common.” Ben mentioned power, too. I’ll switch out the PS and see if that is it.

Switched out the PS, still no go.

And have you tried with a different set of optical media, just in case it’s the media that are damaged?

Yes, tested the discs on a Widoz machine. No problem with the media.

Could those CDs — I do not know what’s on them — be copy-protected or perhaps be regionally locked?

No, they are digital photos I put on them. I can open the CDs on other machines without problem.

In addition, I just completed installing a CD drive known to be good (as of a half hour ago) and it does the same thing: is recognized by the os, works as if loading the pictures, but Dolphin does not register the CD.

To my thinking this is definitely a settings problem. I think it is something I’m doing, or have done wrong, related to mounting the CD-ROMs.

The only thing I have not tested is removing one of the CD-ROM players from my Linux machine, install it in the Windows machine, and see if it works there. I’m hesitating to do that because I am 90 percent certain the problem has to do with settings related to mounting.

It would be very helpful if you or someone else could show me a correct set of statements to try to clean up the mounting process so blockdev could be opened when a CD is inserted. You can see from my text above the commands I have tried, and what I have put into /etc/fstab which may be entirely wrong.

Ah… You added them to /etc/fstab? Well, I wouldn’t do that. For removable storage, I just let Plasma handle that by way of its automagic.

Have you tried that?

I really don’t like editing /etc/fstab. You can try simply removing any lines you put in there and reboot.

If I have a specific option in mind, then I use gnome-disks to set the mount options - it doesn’t make mistakes… for my permanent mounts I have disks show up in Dolphin by label (/mnt/T4 /mnt/W4 and so on)…

My DVD drive is generally plugged in, if I need it, I shutdown, plug in, boot up - no fstab entries are required.

As you’re confident of your hardware and media, this is the obvious culprit… however, from your statement:

:triangular_flag: This is a red flag.

  • I would also strongly advise you to simply backup those disks and throw them out.

  • That they work on some other machine - so you can simply back them up.

  • For portability, you can pick up a cheap USB drive that’s bigger than a full stack of DVD’s or an even more massive stack of CD’s

  • I did a bit of ‘DVD archiving’ and wrote a couple of ‘mp3 CD’s’ (when I had a 300 GiB hard drive) and found it painfully slow and quite unreliable… this was in the early 2000’s and by 2015 I had disposed of most of those discs.

Aside from dirt and scratching, discs can generally degrade over time. Combining this with Lasers which have limited lifespans that might read some discs and not others… we should regard optical drives as being obsolete - the primary use now being for recovering data.

Whilst you might keep the disks for nostalgia, maybe some ASMR as you listen to the drive whirr and grind it’s way through random reads…

For an archive of 50 GB we’re taking multiple hours writing time, compared to less than 10 minutes for flash drives and HDD’s, maybe down to 3 minutes for a SATA SSD,

So for portability, buy an SSD with a USB 3 interface, if you don’t mind plugging - a SATA SSD will do nicely.

For archiving, HDD is still king.

Two thought that might lead to a better understanding of the problem:

1. Create a new User account for testing purposes, login to it – a real login and not “switch user” – and let us know whether or not the problem persists.

2. Shut down you machine (not standby or hibernate) – after a full five minutes, switch it on again, and check whether the optical drives have now initialised properly.

I did as you suggested in (1). Didn’t work – CD players still not showing. I evidently did something wrong because after deleting the temporary user account I no longer have administrator status, just standard. What do I have to do to get back administrator status?

In User Accounts my user information in grayed-out lists Account Type as Standard, but when I click on the account it shows as Administrator. But I can’t access admin functions.

I’m not aware of automagic. How do I try it?

Disregard. I found automagic at sourceforge and am studying it now. Thanks.

The fun of troubleshooting..

Seems that it’s plausible that it could be one of two things, since we’ve eliminated so much already.

1. USB power/controller

Or just something related to this specific PC combined with this external CD-ROM.

I assume the external CD-ROM is externally powered? Even so, it might be worth trying a USB input on an isolated controller.. You generally can’t tell which port is what, without the motherboard manual. Even ones wired to the front (if they exist), could be on the same controller as a certain row on the back, for example.

2. Windows is less error prone (at least with this this specific media you have created, Is it iso9660 or udf, with or without extensions, does it even use partitions?)

Seems unlikely, and it would sadden me, but it’s still a possibility.

But to follow down this path, which might be a dead end. You could try an official Manjaro package called ddrescue.

You don’t mount the device, but this aggressively tries a variety of ways to pull data from the device, ignoring or limiting errors.

Then you can run:

sudo ddrescue /dev/sr0 image.iso mapfile

mapfile is used if you ever need to resume – you can delete it after. And it will attempt to write out the entire CD to image.iso.

I realise this isn’t a fix to the problem (even though you could mount the image if that worked). But this does help troubleshoot.

I installed gnome-disks (now just called Disks) and it is nice. It immediately saw the two CD drives. I selected the one that was working away at a CD but still saw nothing in Dolphin. I found the Edit Mount Options and went with Disks’ mount. Still nothing doing with seeing the disk. So I restarted the PC and when I opened Disks it no longer saw the CD drive it had mounted. After a while it saw it as a “4.7 GB Block Device /dev/sr0.” I don’t know what to make of that. Still no joy from Dolphin. Will welcome any thoughts you have about what transpired with Disks.

I’m totally with you re DVDs. They have been the cause of some of the worst data experiences I’ve had. These 100 or so I’ve been going through have a lot of crap on them and are not all that important to me. I just wanted to go through them one last time (I’m ancient) to make sure there is nothing on them I want to print or put in my digital album. Most if not all of the keepers are already doubly archived on SSDs (I’m a little nervous about that).

But I do feel the need to get this PC problem resolved. Thanks for your advice and information. I appreciate it.

That probably is not the automagic that @Aragorn was referring to. I think he just meant that Plasma can automatically mount removable media without the user needing to do anything.

Just open System Settings → Disks & Cameras → Device Auto-Mount and set your preferences.

For example, here’s mine:

As your CD player plugs in via USB, you should make sure that the “On Login” & “On Attach” boxes are ticked for that device.
