Can't stream videos: firefox, chromium after update

I do not know what might be the problem but I can not stream video on neither firefox or chromium. I have tried Netflix, youtube and disney+. The same problem on all.
I can scroll, I can just not make the video play it just looks like it is buffering.
Suggestions?

buffering

An anecdote - happens from time to time, rarely though:

I have my bluetooth headphones connected.
Video doesn’t play - I can scroll, but it doesn’t play.
I disconnect my bluetooth headphones, so that the sound is going through the speakers.
In the same instant the video starts to play.
Switch headphones off and on again - connect them again - and all is well and as it should be.

Sure, if the browser cannot address the audio device, it will not start any video.

Why is pulseaudio and pipewire active at the same time? Some conflict seems to be introduced, because pipewire has pulseaudio builtin, it is called pipewire-pulse.

It seems it is not totally anecdotal.
I do not have bluetooth headphones but…
On the youtube tab there is a loudspeaker symbol if I click it to mute it the video starts to play. This does not work on netflix since there is no loudspeaker symbol on those tabs.
The pulseAudio panel plugin that I use for sound normally does not have any effect on the playback.

So should I remove pulseaudio which is installed and add pipewire-pulse? when I try that I get that I break dependencies:

checking dependencies...
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
:: removing pulseaudio breaks dependency 'pulseaudio' required by manjaro-pulse
:: removing pulseaudio breaks dependency 'pulseaudio=17.0+r43+g3e2bb8a1e-1' required by pulseaudio-bluetooth
:: removing pulseaudio breaks dependency 'pulse-native-provider' required by pulseaudio-ctl
:: removing pulseaudio breaks dependency 'pulseaudio=17.0+r43+g3e2bb8a1e-1' required by pulseaudio-zeroconf

I did:

sudo pacman -Rdd pulsaudio
sudo pacman -S pipewire-pulse

Should I clean up something after this or done it some other way? I use pulsaudio-ctl all the time and it still works now.

Now streaming on youtube works but not Netflix. I have an error code e100 which means according to netflix “it is an issue with data stored on your device stops Netflix from playing”.
Suggestions?

You mean pactl, right? Sure pipewire-pulse is a drop in replacement for pulseaudio.

sudo pacman -R pulsaudio manjaro-pulse pulseaudio-bluetooth pulseaudio-zeroconf

Or maybe just disable and mask the service:

systemctl --user stop pulseaudio.service
systemctl --user disable pulseaudio.service
systemctl --user mask pulseaudio.service

Now it is still there, but will never run on its own.

Thank you very much to everyone, i haven’t been able to run any video content in any browser since the last update, and pulseaudio was the culprit.

Hi there,

I have the exact Same issues! I cant Play any Videos in qny Browser :face_with_peeking_eye:

Disable and masking Pulseaudio did Not Help. Then i have No audio at all. Ist this Just a broken Update? What can i try?

Installing manjaro-pipewire should take care of the legacy PulseAudio stuff. I don’t recall having to subsequently remove anything.

sudo pacman -Syu manjaro-pipewire

Worth noting I needed to tag helvum to that command. (Try without first; if it complains then add anything it needs).

I had an issue with audio late last year; re-installing PipeWire as above fixed it.

mhhh i tried a lot to uninstall but in most of the time some dependencies are breaking

sudo pacman -Syu manjaro-pipewire  ✔

Update: okay, i just removed the conflicting packages and installed manjaro-pipewire. It worked for one video and then it was broken again, but with helvum it got fixed! thanks a ton!
