Can't get the bootloader/grub into UEFI

I can think of 2 reasons it can happen.
CSM is enabled in BIOS/UEFI. Compatibility-mode and from this follows reason nr. 2. You probably get 2 boot options from USB-stick. One is MBR (CSM/Legacy) and the other is UEFI. And if you choose MBR, the above problem is the result.

Do you get an option that mentions UEFI? Do you see that option in motherboards BIOS for the USB-stick?
Either way, if you have it, disable CSM/Legacy in BIOS. This should force UEFI-only.

Thank you for your quick answer.
Sadly you’re wrong.
I add a photo to my initial question.

I was thinking of a UEFI-problem, too and I still think so.
So if there is another option, which might could cause that, please let me know!

edit: guess I can’t add a photo. Getting error 422
The Options are “UEFI with CSM”, “LEGACY” and “UEFI” and it is set to “UEFI” and I’m pretty sure it was set that way all the time.

Your UEFI System Partition (ESP) is only 100mb; this is the default size of the ESP created by Windows during installation. Unfortunately, 100mb is usually insufficient to host the respective boot files of both Windows and Linux.

It’s possible this is why your Manjaro boot files were not written to the ESP, if for example, Calamares had not enough space to do so. It could also be unrelated, but regardless, a larger partition is preferable. Alternately, some people insist on creating a second ESP for Linux in this situation, which arguably has some merit.

So do I need to delete that Windows Bootloader so that system will use the bootloader I configure and install with manjaro or will that fail?
Also I need to say, that I started with an empty drive so initially there was no Windows and Windows Bootloader and still the error appeared during the first and the following installations before I installed Windows10.

The grub install makes 2 things, it copies the 2 MB grubx64.efi to the ESP (you do not really need 1000MB for this, you see Microsoft has 100MB for their ESP which is a bit too small… i would recommend the middle ground for the future - 200-300-500MB) AND it makes an EFI variable with the boot entry, so it appears in the menu. Looks from the log it fails with the second task and i am unfortunately clueless why…

You can try to install to the first ESP, it probably has 2 MB of free space, but i do not think that is the problem. Sorry.

he has made and mounted a second ESP - 1GB

so it is really not a problem with the disk writing then, but with the variable writing

you do not do this, grub will chainload the windows loader so it needs it. And the windows will complain otherwise. They should coexist, if there is enough space.

Maybe there is something specific to MSI… like the efi looking for a specific path …i do not know.
Maybe MSI is one of those who do not allow more than one ESP on a drive, strictly speaking it is not in the specification. So maybe it is worth trying to work with those first ESP, at least as experiment.

No. The Windows bootloader should not be deleted. However, as it’s a new installation you might consider extending the ESP to 300MB, for example, after you install Windows (if you can find a safe way to do that). Then install Manjaro, confident in knowing enough space is available.

Please take careful note of the points raised by @zhongsiu, as they are also important to ensure a successful installation.

You might also like to read through Multiboot Windows and Linux on Separate Disks → Skip past the separate disks tutorial part, and read everything under Important Caveats.

I hope this helps. Cheers.

Not according to this. Some conflicting information, methinks.

Thank you really much! I think I will try to make it clean and start completely new and make sure to have a bigger efi partition. Its worth a try!

I’m sorry for not making it clear:
What you can see in that Screenshot, is the drive before the manjaro installation.
During the manjaro installation, I set the partitions as written in my initial request.

Btw: I started with 550MB for EFI, but went to 1000 to be really really sure. Will go back to 550 as you guys told me

Just be aware that if you let Windows create the ESP, it will only be 100mb. Additionally, sometimes Windows has difficulty installing its boot files to an existing ESP. Because of this, some people choose to just let Windows do what it will, and then manually create a second ESP for Linux.

With careful management this can work, but I don’t much care for it at all, which is why I usually recommend separate disks (Sometimes that’s not possible, I know). Fortunately it’s a new installation for you, so you have the luxury of a redo if things don’t work as planned.

Good luck.

4 posts were split to a new topic: EFI System Partition (ESP) size and commentary

Are you guys sure, that this conversation belongs in here?
No offense, but that doesn’t really match the topic anymore ^^

None taken, but at least it’s related.

dont whether this is relevant, but all EFI partitions i’ve seen were FAT16 and not FAT32 like here

UEFI spec mandates support for FAT12, FAT16, and FAT32.

I honestly dont really know why I use anything other than FAT32, unless it was a preexisting partition I wished to preserve.

Actually … looking, it seems that using anything other than FAT32 is discouraged ;

I’ve seen either FAT12/16 used for a BSD boot partition and the occasional ESP on non-mainstream Linux distributions; too infrequently to question it; but, mainly fat32, otherwise; which is most appropriate.

Three more posts for @cscs to move somewhere appropriate.

Which version of Manjaro do you use ?
The most recent ?

Yes, I downloaded it fresh from the manjaro-website.

I tried some other things.
First I deleted everything from the drive and installed manjaro (without editing the partitions) for all space on the drive.
That worked out fine.
Then I deleted everything again and installed windows for a part of the drive (more or less as it was before) and I added unallocated space what I used later to extend that 100MB Windows-Bootloader to 1,1GB.
Afterwards I installed it again and failed again. Here’s the log:

The unit files have no installation config (WantedBy=, RequiredBy=, UpheldBy=,
Also=, or Alias= settings in the [Install] section, and DefaultInstance= for
template units). This means they are not meant to be enabled or disabled using systemctl.

Possible reasons for having these kinds of units are:
* A unit may be statically enabled by being symlinked from another unit's
  .wants/, .requires/, or .upholds/ directory.
* A unit's purpose may be to act as a helper for some other unit which has
  a requirement dependency on it.
* A unit may be started when needed via activation (socket, path, timer,
D-Bus, udev, scripted systemctl call, ...).
* In case of template units, the unit is meant to be enabled with some
  instance name specified.

So now I’m in the same situation like before, BUT we have 1GB Windows-Bootloader.
The partitioning isn’t that good, but it should work at least.

I’m more and more thinking, that I make a pretty obvious stupid mistake.
Maybe this new information give you a guess.

Thanks again for all activity to this point.

Again I can’t copy a picture in here, but Drive before installation (right before starting the process is)

  • 1,07GB Windows Boot manager
  • 16MB unknown (Windows crap)
  • 281GB Windows
  • 1GB freespace - was shrinking double, so this is left for the moment but shouldn’t be a reason to worry.
  • 538MB NTFS (guess more windows crap)
  • 600MB fat32 Manjaro efi
  • 73GB ext4 Root
  • 97GB ext4 Home
  • 16,3GB Swap

And right after I got a new trust level xD

And again, the partitioning stays, because the system works, just the bootloader is missing in the UEFI. So it can’t boot from it (without live-USB)

Congrats.
Now you can wear a superfluous badge next to you name.

We can in theory separate writing on the disk and writing to efi.
Wenn you boot in the live iso, can you access the efi at all. How about

[ -d /sys/firmware/efi ] && echo "UEFI Boot Detected" || echo "Legacy BIOS Boot Detected"
efibootmgr
 efivar -l
