Can't connect to aur.archlinux.org:443

Today I need help myself

For about two months, I’ve been having intermittent problems connecting to the AUR.

The problem seemed to be local to this computer, as other computers on the network were able to connect to the AUR without any problems at other times. Later, however, it seemed to keep jumping around, and one or another PC couldn’t connect to the AUR.
Currently, none of my computers can connect to the AUR.
I use Trizen for everything.

trizen -Ss zoom

while ping works :man_shrugging:

Am I being blocked? :footprints:

For the past two months, it worked on and off. Now, for a few days, it hasn’t worked at all.

I haven’t changed anything on the network in the past six months, haven’t installed any updates on the Fritzbox, and haven’t noticed anything unusual.

I have the feeling that something is constantly being reconfigured (and not locally on my end). Should I assume I probably need to contact my provider?

(now is bedtime  )

Not that i have any clue what trizen even is

But since your ping is working… it looks to me, that its maybe trizen related?

Knowing the german ISPs…not entirely impossible to be something on their side. I had a problem only with ssl trafic 2 years ago on Unitymedia (now Vodafone). The next month they updated something again and it fixed itself.

You can try connecting your phone with usb so to use the tethering and test another provider and dns (do not forget to turn off the wifi on the phone).

Alternatively you can test other dns, set them for the current connection in network manager. 1.1.1.1, 8.8.8.8, 9.9.9.9 whichever big corp you like (hate the least, that is).

Have you checked your system time?

Have you tried using pamac or yay for comparison?

Yes - that can happen.

The IP address - which is the one responding to ping - is likely a proxy server - an entry point.

The 500 response code is technically Internal Server Error which has been emitted from the service behind the proxy and forwarded to the client - in this case Trizen.

AUR is throttling requests - how exactly I don’t know - it could be a combination of user-agent and IP address.

I suggest you test using the Arch way - if you cannot clone using git - then there is something wrong on the inside - and reporting to the aurweb team at Arch Linux / aurweb · GitLab would be the course of action.

  • clone the repo using git
  • cd into the folder and run makepkg

  • Did you spin up an alternative? yay zoom or paru zoom would take suspicion away from Trizen and focus on your network situation… though that’s pretty clear TBH.

If all your machines fail to connect, then I would like to test an alternative - connect via your phone…

The problem with trizen is that it’s an AUR helper which is… only available from the AUR. :stuck_out_tongue: So if you want to install it, you’ll need some other means of accessing the AUR first. The chicken and the egg.

Personally I use (the command-line version of) pamac for the AUR, or — if pamac fails, which it does sometimes¹ — yay, which is in the repositories and does the same thing.

¹ “Nooooo, really???!” :stuck_out_tongue:

Luckily yay is still in the repos, because someone  wanted to remove it.

Yes, but he was properly slapped on the wrist, and he did his penitence.

(Likewise for octopi, by the way.)

You may want to run @megavolt 's test in addition to see if the server really reacts on your request:
curl --head https://aur.archlinux.org/packages-meta-ext-v1.json.gz

Also to mention: yay & friends connect to aur.archlinux.org while pamac (on manjaro systems) connects to aur.manjaro.org
And for pamac aur testing use curl --head https://aur.manjaro.org/packages-meta-ext-v1.json.gz

Result:

I’m blocked from aur.archlinux.org (for whatever reason)

This leads to the question:

  • Can Trizen be configured to use the Manjaro server?
Answer: Yes (after all, the source code is available)
  • Has anyone (of you) done this before?
    Or is this new territory?

I don’t want to switch to another AUR helper. I’ve grown fond of Trizen after testing various helpers. It’s exactly what best fits my skills.

What about using VPN?

I use a VPN :+1:

But it’s self-hosted  on the very network that’s blocked.
:footprints:

What!? Wouldn’t one want to host a VPN on anything but one’s own IP?

That would explain why you are blocked. If a reverse lookup for your IP points to a hosting provider of some sort…

Look at ~/.config/trizen/trizen.conf. Turning some of the knobs may provide insight into what happens.

This VPN isn’t intended for use on my PC. It’s used on my mobile devices. When activated on the mobile device, it is encrypted from the mobile device all the way to the home network. From there, all requests are sent out as if the mobile devices were always at home.

Ah - that makes sense - where ever you are you are always home

but… that should affect the use of trizen - of less of course you have 100 deivices on your local network that makes aur throttle your ip.

So i changed the url in trizen, but this is not as easy as i thought:
while aur.archlinux.org is blocked

trizen -Ss zoom
** GET https://aur.archlinux.org/rpc?v=5&type=search&arg=zoom ==> 500 Can't connect to aur.archlinux.org:443 (Network is unreachable) (1s)
:: Unable to GET https://aur.archlinux.org/rpc?v=5&type=search&arg=zoom ==> 500 Can't connect to aur.archlinux.org:443 (Network is unreachable)
extra/xaos 4.3.1-1
    Interactive fractal zoomer

manjaro-server seems not to answer those (rpc-)questions :man_shrugging:

 trizen_m -Ss zoom
:: Unable to GET https://aur.manjaro.org/rpc?v=5&type=search&arg=zoom ==> 404 Not Found
extra/xaos 4.3.1-1
    Interactive fractal zoomer

no - it’s only purpose is to serve the metadata… the only response you will ever get is the metadata archive.

How this work is because the popularity of pamac caused aur rpc to break down - therefore a workaround was created in collaboration with the aurweb team.

No there are only 5 manjaro-devices that use trizen in this network. :frowning:

Today i did try pamac:

pamac install zoom
