Can't change default audio device

Hello, I’m having trouble selecting the default devices in the volume control tray and the system settings.

When I try to select the default device in the system tray, it doesn’t change the default device but adds the mark that is the default device without removing it from the other device

Screenshot_20250301_110659

If I try to change it from the system settings, it adds a line showing that it noticed that I clicked on the device, but it doesn’t do anything, so far, the only temporary solution I found is running systemctl --user restart pipewire, but I will have the same problem after a restart.

I would appreciate any advice on how to fix this

Check names of audio playback sinks

pactl list sinks short | cut -f2

and name of the default sink

pactl get-default-sink

To change the default sink use this command with sink name from first command

pactl set-default-sink [name]

Or install Qt version of PulseAudio Volume Controlpavucontrol-qt

using pavucontrol-qt does let me change the default device now, but the volume control and settings aren’t getting updated, it islike nothing has changed, I think because of that I can’t use the buttons or something to increase or reduce the volume, I need to open either the settings or pavucontrol-qt

Restoring PipeWire and Wireplumber settings to default

delete any custom configuration folders

sudo rm -r /etc/pipewire /etc/wireplumber

or

rm -r ~/.config/pipewire ~/.config/wireplumber

and restart pipewire and wireplumber services to load default configurations

systemctl --user restart pipewire pipewire-pulse wireplumber
1 Like

I did sudo rm -r /etc/pipewire /etc/wireplumber, it deleted the pipewire but the wireplumber folder didn’t exist, and I don’t have either of them in the .config.
After I restarted the services, and restarted the computer it still had the same problem

Do you have any more ideas ?

something else I found is that it’s only happening on my user, I created a new user to test this and it didn’t have any problems, so I’m not sure what is causing the problem but it is a user specific bug
