Can't boot with splash due to a gdm error

Once I have installed the latest update (09/12), my ThinkPad could not boot anymore. I got a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left corner. According to the logs from journalctl, gdm has some issue:

Sep 14 22:54:01 rotor gnome-session-binary[1131]: Unrecoverable failure in required component org.gnome.Shell.desktop

I realized that if I skip the display of the splash screen (I deleted the splash option from the grub config), the boot is fine. However, I am worried… I tried to fallback to the 5.10 kerner, but it did not help.

Do you have any idea what goes wrong? Or how could I extract more info that helps the troubleshooting?

I think you should search in the Forum for something like:
