Can't Boot with SATA PCI-E card installed

Hi, I’ve got Manjaro installed on my desktop (Ryzen 5 3600, ASUS Prime X570 Pro and an RTX 2060 Super) on a Corsair NVME SSD.

I recently installed a PCI-E SATA expansion card but for some reason if I have the card installed I can’t boot Manjaro. I have a switch on the PCI-E card for different modes (AHCI boot, IDE boot and No Boot (i.e. just use it to plug drives in)). Regardless of which setting I use Manjaro will only boot when I take the card out of my computer.

I have windows installed on a seperate SanDisk NVME drive and that boots without issue when the card is plugged in and set to no boot.

I can also get Ubuntu to boot off a USB on a 50/50 basis when the card is installed and I turn on the compatabillity boot option in my BIOS.

Its just Manjaro I can’t get to boot. I’ve tried all three settings on the PCI-E card, and again with the compatability boot option turned on and nothing it will not boot. I get as far as some text appearing to say No irq handler for vector which I’ve tried looking online to see if that has something to do with it but it doesn’t appear so. From what I’ve read that’s an issue with the BIOS which would make sense as I first started seeing that message after a BIOS update prior to getting the PCI-E card.

I’ve also tried booting with and without drives connected to the PCI-E card. When the card is set to no boot I get stuck in a boot loop where it will get the no-irq message than reboot if I set the card to either AHCI or IDE boot modes then it gets to the no-irq message and hangs there (of note if I try to boot windows with the card in either of these modes it fails with a BSOD but I think that may be to do with the way the motherboard is managing the SATA ports and the NVME ports but I’ve not looked into that too much).

When I take the card out and boot Manjaro I don’t get any logs that I can find. I’ve looked at journalctl -b -1 for the last boot and it only shows the last successful boot with no errors so it doesn’t seem to even get far enough for it to save the logs. I’m at a complete loss now for things to try or what it might be thats stopping the boot.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This is the PCI-E card I have:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07T8XNQT6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I didn’t notice at the time but it does say windows only for this particular card but I would have thought that it just wouldn’t be picked up in Linux if it couldn’t use it in the same way a HDD is ignored or just inaccessible if it can’t read the file system.

When booting the computer with compatibilty mode turned on I see an additional screen from the PCI-E card which tells me which boot mode its in and also its model. Its reporting as a Asmedia ASM106x

Again any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Recently I have also bought a pci-e card but choose a Marvell chipset one … ( not Asmedia chipset ) .
And had zero problems …

Nonetheless it might depend on the way that mainBoard see the card and you might need to adjust some flag directly in the GRUB | kernel startup details …
The BSOD in Windowz is a warning that the something is really not Ok …

An idea to test further would be starting up with the “no-acpi” flag during GRUB …

  1. Have you tried booting a Manjaro USB stick (I.E. not your installed Manjaro) and see if that works?

  2. What’s the output of:

inxi --full --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host

with the card removed if #1 did not work and with the card inserted if it did? (please specify which scenario the inxi is from)

:innocent:

Hi, I’ve tried your suggestion, Manjaro just won’t boot if the card is installed (either on my local install or using a live usb).

I’ve included the output from inxi below (from my local install WITHOUT the pcie card installed):

Hi, here is the output on Ubuntu WITH the pcie card installed. While Ubuntu does seem to work its only some of the time and only if I turn on the compatability boot in the BIOS. Otherwise it behaves in exactly the same way manjaro does.

So Ubuntu seems to be loaded from an external USB, but I can’t see anything different between Ubuntu and Manjaro, so I’m thinking Ubuntu is ignoring the PCIE card or nothing is hooked up to it. Is my assumption of nothing being hooked up to the new card correct?

In that case, can you give the output of lspci on Ubuntu with the card installed and not installed? (and if not too much to ask: another inxi with something hooked up to the card?

:upside_down_face:

Hi, you’re spot on there haven’t been any drives plugged into the card.

I’ve included the lspci results below with and without a drive plugged into the card and also ran inxi again from ubuntu with the card installed and a drive plugged in. I completely forgot about running lspci without the card plugged in. I’ll do that one a bit later and update. For some reason today I couldn’t get ubuntu to boot at all with the card plugged in in ‘no boot’ mode. Normally no boot is the one that works with ubuntu. Today I had to use it in AHCI mode to get ubuntu to boot, and once booted even though the card appeared in the results from lspci I couldn’t see the drive in the file manager, whereas all the other drives I have plugged into the motherboard did appear there. Also because they’re easier to access in my case I initially tried booting with one of my blu ray drives plugged into the card but that resulted in a kernel panic whenever I tried to boot.

Hrmpf: found it…

0c:00.0 SATA controller: ASMedia Technology Inc. ASM1062 Serial ATA Controller (rev 02)

As Manjaro doesn’t boot try the following (Don’t go to the next step if a step works)

  • Download the latest ISO and boot that.
  • Install that ISO to another USB stick and upgrade the kernel to 5.8, install the card and then boot.

If even that doesn’t work, please feed back…

:innocent:

Hi, I’ve tried the latest ISO on a USB with no joy, I updated the the latest 20.1 version the issue is still present there and I’ve also gone to the 5.8 kernel and still no joy. I’ve tried all the above with the bios compatibility mode on and off, still no luck :frowning:

Grasping at straws now: try the Real-Time (_rt) kernels

:scream:

There was a similar problem with Asmedia. ASMedia SATA3 Mode has to be disabled:

Hi,

The real time kernel doesn’t work either. In fact I actually can’t boot at all using the RT kernel (5.6) it just says unable to mount filesystem. Unrecognized filesystem type efivarfs regardless of whether the PCIe card is plugged in or not.

@megavolt I don’t have the option to do that with my motherboard (Asus Prime x570 pro). The only option I can find anywhere relating to SATA is enable/disable and all it does is disable all the SATA ports on the MB. I can’t find the article now but I did read somewhere that you can access the PCIe cards BIOS using ctrl + m on boot. Whether that’s true or not I don’t know but it doesn’t work for me :frowning: so I haven’t been able to check if there’s an option there I can change.

The only thing I have on the card is a switch for AHCI boot, IDE boot and No boot modes. Using AHCI or IDE boot stops the boot for any OS (Linux or windows) so to get even windows (or sometimes ubuntu to boot) I have to set the switch to no boot.

I’m not sure why this is, my first guess would be the boot flag on the card is conflicting with the MB boot and I don’t have any bootable drives plugged in to the card so it just falls over.

Try looking for a firmware update for the card. This looks like a firmware bug.

:sob:

Expansion cards can be tricky

Since you have a 50/50 chance using Ubuntu - this drags towards a kernel issue.

Compatibility boot option - makes every little neck hair raise - the sounds like a hardware flaw with you device.

Windows being able to boot does not count with Linux.

We had a saying years ago when some hardware vendors stated - Linux wreck our hardware - the response was - mostly - No - Linux is exposing the flaws …

I would throw it right back at the seller - if they are serious - then no questions asked - if they ask - just tell them - Linux won’t work…
