Can't boot past GRUB, initramfs fallback work though

Hello!

I’m a newbie to linux and have now decided to try Manjaro. Unfortunately, I can’t boot past the grub menu using the normal image and I get stuck at a black screen. So i’m posting this through the fallback image.
Things that i’ve tried are;

  • Using sudo mhwd -a pci nonfree 0300 to install the proprietary graphic drivers
  • Doing pacman-mirrors -f3 and sudo pacman -Syyu to update the packages?
  • Installing and running using the 5.4 kernel version instead of 5.9
  • Also tried waiting for 30 minutes at the black screen.

Now i’m desperate for help…
Here’s some information i know how to provide:

I thought video-linux might not be needed, so i removed it before doing sudo mhwd -a pci nonfree 0300 again

Edit: A point i’m not sure is necessary or not; before i installed Manjaro, I had Ubuntu installed with just an efi and a root partition. When I installed Manjaro, i used manual partitioning and only partitioned the previously root partition without touching the efi partition at all.

You have a dual gpu so video-linux is need for the intel driver… video-llinux contains drivers amd/ati/intel …

Bad idea :-1:

Since you installed this, video-linux is needed. It boots this way with intel gpu and you can offload apps to the dGPU NVIDIA.

If you install nvida as first gpu only, then intel is not needed.

Thanks for replying!

So I did sudo mhwd -i pci video-linux (Edit: out of curiosity, is it alright to run these commands in the fallback image?) in an attempt to maybe reinstall it and now this is what mhwd -li shows

I then tried booting again still using the version 5.4 kernel, but i’m still stuck at the black screen. Any steps I might be missing? I’ll try booting using the 5.9 kernel just in case and edit it in the result…
Edit2: 5.9 also didn’t work…

@learning-bakpao

Could you post the Xorg.0.log ?

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log

There should be some hints why it stucks at a blackscreen.

Sorry for the late reply,

@learning-bakpao Did this just happen randomly, or you installed a dual boot? Boot into manjaro using fallback and open terminal, type this:

Sudo pacman -Syuu
Sudo update-grub
Sudo grub-install --recheck /dev/sda1

Sorry for the late reply, sudo pacman -Syuu took some time for me, but Thanks for replying!

It’s a fresh install of Manjaro. The live USB also has a hard time getting past the menu, but the one moment it did work, i installed Manjaro. Though I still haven’t been able to boot with the normal image. still the fallback at the moment.(Edit: Not anymore I think!)
Around a day after posting in the forum, since I wanted to start using my laptop, i installed Ubuntu in some free space I had. So the problem existed even before having the dual boot…

Anyways, thank you! I think it worked! If i didn’t misclicked, I should be typing this from the 5.4 kernel version image! (Edit: I’m quite sure now I didn’t misclicked!)

the 5.9 image however is still stuck at the black screen, would doing pacman -Syuu from that version’s fallback fix it?

@learning-bakpao Not sure, try reinstalling 5.9. Glad I could help, your problem does happen to me when I install another linux distro.

okay then. I’ll consider it the solution anyway.
