Hi everyone,
First, I’am quite new to Linux and it’s my first time posting. I’ll try my best to make this post as clear as possible, but please forgive me if I don’t follow any usual rules I’m not aware of.
So, I made the noob mistake of interrupting an update and I can’t recover my Linux Manjaro boot. So I followed this [HowTo] :
Difficulty: ★★☆☆☆
So you couldn’t wait until the update process had completed and you went for the reset/power button, didn’t you? And now you’re getting the message that you don’t have a kernel installed. Well, you’re not the only one — we’re seeing it happen all the time.
So, here’s how to fix it, you impatient n00b.
If you don’t happen to have a recent Manjaro installer USB/DVD/CD handy, direct your browser to this wonderful page , download t…
which didn’t solve my issue. When doing so, my Grub menu won’t show any of my previous boot options (Manjaro / Windows). I executed all lines separately and they all seem to work well, expect
update-grub
which provides the error message after execute os-prober to detect other bootable partitions
ERROR: mkdir /var/lock/dmraid
Adding boot menu entry for UEFI Firmware Settings ...
Found memtest86+ image: /boot/memtest86+/memtest.bin
/usr/bin/grub-probe: warning: unknown device type nvme0n1.
done
and this my manjaro partition is on /dev/nvme0n1, I wonder if the boot options are actually added or not.
On a side note, I also tried the solution provided by : Boot stuck on /dev/nvme0n1p5: clean
I did
sudo manjaro-chroot -a
pacman -Syu linux61
which provides me with a boot option for a Manjaro (don’t if it’s the “good one”), but I’m stuck on a black screen with the following message when booting on it:
/dev/nvme0n1p5: clean, x/x files, x/x blocks
and the solution provided by the post doesn’t work for me.
Any help will be appreciated, thanks in advance.

This is normal - despite the word ERROR in it
If you do:
sudo manjaro-chroot -a
to get into your system from the USB booted iso
and then:
pacman-mirrors -f
and
pacman -Syyu
the system should be properly updated.
Is this the case?
Or are there any errors?
beside the one mentioned above, which is normal:
ERROR: mkdir /var/lock/dmraid
Install another kernel - and do not do it via pacman
, but via mhwd-kernel
mhwd-kernel -l
lists all available
mhwd-kernel -i linux66
(for instance)
installs that one
Try any of the LTS kernels - you can have more than one to choose from.

Thanks for your answer.
The system is indeed updated properly, everything is up to date and nothing to do.
While trying to install a new kernel as proposed, here is what I got
:: Synchronizing package databases...
core is up to date
extra is up to date
community is up to date
multilib is up to date
error: no targets specified (use -h for help)
I checked in the Grub menu and the new kernel doesn’t seem to appear…
The context of this is missing - I have no idea what the meaning of:
error: no targets specified (use -h for help)
is or could be.
I didn’t see you using:
mhwd-kernel -i some_kernel
btw:
theom:
community is up to date
this is not fatal (not yet) but that repository has not existed for more than a year.
There is a .pacnew file for /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
You should tend to that - after all this.

I was confused too, and triple check that I was properly using your recommended command. I litteraly copy paste the output of
mhwd-kernel -i linux66
Alright, thanks. That will be my next goal after solving this issue.
This was just an example I wrote from memory - it may not be a correct name.
That’s why I suggested:
mhwd-kernel -l
to list what is available.
or:
mhwd-kernel -li
to see what is installed already.
You should have two, to have a choice.

Sure! I checked the listed kernels, tried 2 of them, same outputs. I also checked how to use install via your recommended command.
Did you reboot after installing each kernel?
something can’t be right with the update that was done before
if this
mhwd-kernel -i linux54
(or any other available kernel)
returns:
error: no targets specified (use -h for help)
theom

Yes, I ran
mhwd-kernel -i linux66
which gives the error mentionned before, then reboot. The desired kernel is not installed after this since
mhwd-kernel -li
doesn’t list it.

I do agree with you. All the command recommended by you or [HowTo] Recovering from an interrupted update/upgrade
seems to run smoothly though, besides the update-grub things and our current issue of kernel installation.
No need to reboot then - the error message clearly indicates that nothing was done.
Of course it is not installed.
You where in chroot when you did this?
theom

13
You’re right. I was in chroot
All I can say is:
retrace your steps
post output if you are unsure
manjaro-chroot, refresh mirrors - use this command for a change:
pacman-mirrors -c Germany
This will also tell you whether you have a working network.
then pacman -Syyu
and if then
mhwd-kernel -li
doesn’t list your installed kernels
and
mhwd-kernel -i linux54
doesn’t successfully install that one
then all I can speculate is that chroot failed or was incomplete
and we should start over with what should have been done at the start:
inxi -Fazy
(this one can be done from the iso without chroot)
Another idea:
perhaps mhwd-kernel doesn’t work right in chroot - I would not know why, but perhaps this is the case
so:
pacman -Syu linux54
mkinitcpio -P
update-grub
instead

I retraced the steps and everything geos fine. The command
pacman-mirrors -c Germany
also worked.
Then, as you hinted, mhwd-kernel -i doesn’t seem to work right in chmood, and
pacman -Syu linux54
mkinitcpio -P
update-grub
did the trick for installing a new kernel. However, I’m still stuck at the point mentionned in my initial request message, even with the new kernel :
theom:
On a side note, I also tried the solution provided by : Boot stuck on /dev/nvme0n1p5: clean
I did
sudo manjaro-chroot -a
pacman -Syu linux61
which provides me with a boot option for a Manjaro (don’t if it’s the “good one”), but I’m stuck on a black screen with the following message when booting on it:
/dev/nvme0n1p5: clean, x/x files, x/x blocks
and the solution provided by the post doesn’t work for me.
Any help will be appreciated, thanks in advance.
Well, this is interesting.
And this: A mixture of GPT and MBR - this isn’t ideal;
but No partition data is the most disconcerting.
I think it will be a good idea to unplug the (MBR) USB disk before doing much else, as it will only confuse things. Leave it disconnected. GPT and MBR mode disks typically don’t work well in the same system for a UEFI booting scenario.
Once you’ve done that, please try a reboot, and again providing an inxi
as before, so we can see the difference with that disk removed. While you’re rebooting, you might like to enter BIOS and set it for UEFI booting only (disable CSM).
Then try the procedures @Nachlese has previously given, with his continued guidance.
All being well, the (GPT) NVMe will now be seen as the correct disk to work with.
Edit:- Also, I would consider configuring swap space at some point, especially if you intend hibernating.
Are you really stuck on a black screen or can you change to a TTY ?
There are some threads here which deal with similar issues - it has to do with Nvidia, plymouth and sddm.
You could try to take plymouth
out of the equation
by editing the keyword out of the HOOKS
line in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
and/or
editing /etc/default/grub
and remove the “splash” keyword
then running
mkinitcpio -P
and
update-grub
again

Regarding CSM, I did look at the BIOS Settings but didn’t find anything related to that. I always choose how I’m booting (ie. UEFI booting ?). I am a bit confused.
Are you saying that I should not boot live on the USB disk but rather use the TTY ?
I’ll keep in mind the swap space, thanks
Now that I’ve seen the new inxi
output, and understand that you were using that USB drive as the Live Installer, I can see clearly what went wrong:
The USB (Live Installer) has a Master Boot Record (MBR) partition table. There’s no way that can be used to install a UEFI OS. What you need is for that USB to have a GUID Partition Table (GPT) partition table. Therefore you must create a new Installer USB and make sure the USB uses GPT (required for UEFI).
In fact, I would recommend using a Ventoy USB instead. The beauty of using Ventoy is that nothing else is needed. Simply copy/drag any ISO to the Ventoy USB, and you’re done.
Note that the commands I’ve given below will create a Ventoy USB and force GPT to be used - All existing content should be removed first.
Boot with a Ventoy USB, and ISO files are automatically listed in the Ventoy menu, and can be booted directly. An 32GB (minimum) capacity USB should allow ample space to store several ISOs of your choice.
Ventoy is available from the official Manjaro extra repository:
sudo pacman -S ventoy
Type ventoy
(without arguments) to see usage information:
Usage: Ventoy2Disk.sh CMD [ OPTION ] /dev/sdX
CMD:
-i install Ventoy to sdX (fails if disk already installed with Ventoy)
-I force install Ventoy to sdX (no matter if installed or not)
-u update Ventoy in sdX
-l list Ventoy information in sdX
OPTION: (optional)
-r SIZE_MB preserve some space at the bottom of the disk (only for install)
-s/-S enable/disable secure boot support (default is enabled)
-g use GPT partition style, default is MBR (only for install)
-L Label of the 1st exfat partition (default is Ventoy)
-n try non-destructive installation (only for install)
Write the Ventoy system to an empty USB drive;
use /dev/sdX
to target the device itself, and not a partition:
sudo sh ventoy -i -r 100 -S -g -L VOLUME /dev/sdX
Enable -s
or disable -S
Secure Boot.
Substitute VOLUME
for a volume label name to use.
Substitute /dev/sdX
for the location of your USB device.
Preserve some space on the target device (example allows 100mb).
Update the Ventoy system on an existing Ventoy USB;
ensure the updated Ventoy version is available in Manjaro; and then:
sudo ventoy -u /dev/sdX
The Ventoy USB update process is non-destructive.

I can change to a TTY, sorry for the confusion.
I looked at /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
but didn’t find plymouth in the HOOKS. Moreover, I didn’t encounter « splash » keyword in /etc/default/grub
.
