Can't Boot Into Manjaro After BIOS Update (Dual booting with Windows)

So a couple months back I updated my BIOS, and my boot manager configuration was reset as well as Manjaro no longer loading when I tried to boot into it. I have ignored it thus far since I still could boot into Windows, but now I am trying to get back in with little success. I have read a few threads on similar issues, but tracking with them hasn’t helped so far, and I’m looking for some guidance.

Currently, I am booting into a live USB with manjaro to try and fix my install. Here is some info that other threads suggested posting.

Pretty sure Samsung SSD 970 EVO 1TB (nvme0n1) was my installation disk for Manjaro, but it’s been a while, pretty sure though.

Go back into your bios & make sure that nvme0n1 (if that is where grub is installed) is first in the bootup order.
If it is & you still have issues have a look here > GRUB Disappears as soon as Boot USB is removed

Consider to have both systems in the same mode, so that grub will find the partition of windows. After an UEFI Upgrade its Bootloader could be messed (i mean not grub), so it does not find the grub boot loader. Reinstalling grub or modifying the uefi enty with efibootmgr could solve this

I can confirm that having the nvme0n1 disk first in boot order does not work, nor does selecting it from the boot menu. I only get a black screen when trying to boot from this disk.

I have look at the thread you linked, as well as the thread that is linked within that thread. However, I have not had any success trying the commands suggested there. I may be doing it wrong as honestly I am not very familiar with the commands or what they are actually doing, but either way, no luck so far.

Megavolt:I have tried numerous reinstalls of grub, I am not familiar with efibootmgr, but I will look at this.

I was able to fix my install. Using the bootable USB stick there is an option at the bottom of the initial boot menu that says:

“Detect EFI Boot Loaders”

My Manjaro installation was recognized and then selecting it booted me into that install. Once I was in, I was able to update the system and reinstalled grub. That fixed the issue and now Manjaro shows in the BIOS boot options. Still not sure why using chroot and then trying to reinstall grub didn’t work.

It should have if you properly chrooted your Manjaro installation, and issued the proper commands to reinstall GRUB in UEFI mode. My motherboard has the same ‘issue’ when I update the BIOS it is required to reinstall/update GRUB, and I do that from live USB following this article, basically it is a few commands from live USB:

manjaro-chroot -a

answer the prompt and select your Manjaro installation, you’re now chrooted (terminal changes color)

grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot/efi --bootloader-id=manjaro --recheck

grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

exit

you’re now out of chroot

reboot
