Cannot update to a newer kernel

Hi everybody,
I have a question.
Recently I heard that there are security bugs (CVE) in the linux kernel so I checked the situation on my pc.

mhwd-kernel --listinstalled

Currently running: 5.19.17-2-MANJARO (linux519)
The following kernels are installed in your system:
   * linux515
   * linux517
   * linux518
   * linux519

Which looks outdated

So I ran

sudo pacman -Syu

and following the operations I saw that newer kernels were installed
but if I check again mhwd-kernel --listinstalled I keep seeing the same list as before and even at boot
I can see only those kernels as a list.

Searching on the internet I found this:

 pacman -Ss linux | grep 'linux 6\|linux-headers\|linux-rt\|linux-lt
s' | sort -h

that outputs

   A kernel module for Realtek 8168 network cards for linux-lts
core/linux-headers 7.0.3.arch1-1 [installato]
core/linux-lts 6.18.25-1
core/linux-lts-docs 6.18.25-1
core/linux-lts-headers 6.18.25-1
core/syslinux 6.04.pre3.r3.g05ac953c-4
extra/linux-rt 6.14.0.rt3.arch1-7
extra/linux-rt-docs 6.14.0.rt3.arch1-7
extra/linux-rt-headers 6.14.0.rt3.arch1-7
extra/linux-rt-lts 6.6.87.rt54.arch1-6
extra/linux-rt-lts-docs 6.6.87.rt54.arch1-6
extra/linux-rt-lts-headers 6.6.87.rt54.arch1-6

which is the only proof I find that a more recent kernel trace is on my pc

Can anyone help me in loading a newer kernel?

Thanks

To list available kernels:

mhwd-kernel -l

To install a kernel:

sudo mhwd-kernel -i linux618 (or whatever kernel you choose)

To remove a kernel:

sudo mhwd-kernel -r linux515 (or whatever kernel you choose)

Rebooting will then load the newest kernel.

Kernel 6.18.25 includes a patch for copy fail CVE 2026-31431

linux517 and linux519 are no longer supported and should be removed

sudo mhwd --remove linux517
sudo mhwd --remove linux519

Or use Manjaro Settings Manager - Kernel GUI tool to remove/install kernels

manjaro-settings-manager -m msm_kernel

Thanks!

I ran

sudo mhwd-kernel -i linux618

this is the output

Error: Please make sure if the given kernel(s) exist(s).

Are you actually using Manjaro? linux-lts is an Arch package. It is not available on Manjaro due to Manjaro having multiple LTS kernels available.

To clarify, please provide the full output of inxi -zv8.

Yes I am using Manjaro

this is the output of inxi

Just for info I updated the mirror list with the list of these website

Filtering them with “Up to date”

You seem to have a mix of Arch repos & Manjaro repos in your mirror list:

Here are the Arch ones, which should not be on your system:

Instead, try switching to the Global CDN mirrors, which are always up-to-date:

sudo pacman-mirrors --country Global

Then update your system with an extra y in the command to force a refresh of your pacman databases:

sudo pacman -Syyu

After the update (and a reboot if packages were updated), run the command to list available kernels:

mhwd-kernel -l

You should have linux618 in the list now.

Further to my last post (I want to keep these instructions separate as they are very important), as you have probably been updating from both Arch & Manjaro repos, you likely have some Arch packages on your system which are newer than those in Manjaro’s Stable branch. This may cause system issues due to missing or wrong dependencies, or library version mismatches.

Edit 2026-05-01T10:08:00Z: I just also noticed that your mirrorlist doesn’t seem to have a branch set. You can check your current branch with the following command:

pacman-mirrors --get-branch

If there is no branch set, you need to set your branch before you do an update:

sudo pacman-mirrors --api --set-branch stable (or testing or unstable)

Once you have set your branch and switched to the Global CDN mirrors (which means you will only have 2 mirrors in your mirrorlist), you should run an update which allows package downgrades, so that the Manjaro branch packages will replace the Arch packages:

sudo pacman -Syyuu

The second u in the command enables package downgrades.

In mirrolist I left only the manjaro mirrors.
I can’t find pacman-mirrors using

sudo pacman -S pacman-mirrors

I tried a full system upgrade but the result is still the same

Please post the full output of the following commands:

cat /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist

and

cat /etc/pacman.conf

/etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist

Indeed. Commenting those out won’t hurt. :wink:

You might need to run

sudo pacman -Syyuu

following this, to properly sync with Manjaro packages, but there may well be more cleaning-up needed.

Looks like right now sync is impossibile

sudo pacman-mirrors --country all --api --protocols all --set-branch stable && sudo pacman -Syyuu

And fingers crossed :crossed_fingers:

I cannot install pacman-mirrors. Pacman cannot find this package

Replace /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist with just this:

##
## Manjaro Linux custom mirrorlist
## Generated on 2026-05-01 16:03
##
## Please use 'pacman-mirrors -id' To reset custom mirrorlist
## Please use 'pacman-mirrors -c all' To reset custom mirrorlist
## To remove custom config run 'pacman-mirrors -c all'
##

## Country : Global
Server = https://mirrors.manjaro.org/repo/stable/$repo/$arch

## Country : Global
Server = https://mirrors2.manjaro.org/stable/$repo/$arch

Note: I am assuming that you are on Stable branch for this. Have nothing else in that file apart from the above text.

Then replace /etc/pacman.conf with this:

#
# /etc/pacman.conf
#
# See the pacman.conf(5) manpage for option and repository directives

#

# By default, pacman accepts packages signed by keys that its local keyring
# trusts (see pacman-key and its man page), as well as unsigned packages.
SigLevel    = Required DatabaseOptional
LocalFileSigLevel = Optional
#RemoteFileSigLevel = Required

# NOTE: You must run `pacman-key --init` before first using pacman; the local
# keyring can then be populated with the keys of all official Arch and Manjaro Linux
# packagers with `pacman-key --populate archlinux manjaro`.

#
# REPOSITORIES
# - can be defined here or included from another file
# - pacman will search repositories in the order defined here
# - local/custom mirrors can be added here or in separate files
# - repositories listed first will take precedence when packages

# - URLs will have $repo replaced by the name of the current repo
# - URLs will have $arch replaced by the name of the architecture
#
# Repository entries are of the format:
#       [repo-name]
#       Server = ServerName
#       Include = IncludePath
#
# The header [repo-name] is crucial - it must be present and
# uncommented to enable the repo.
#

[core]
Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist

[extra]
Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist

# If you want to run 32 bit applications on your x86_64 system,
# enable the multilib repositories as required here.

[multilib]
Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist

# An example of a custom package repository. See the pacman manpage for
# tips on creating your own repositories.
#[custom]
#SigLevel = Optional TrustAll
#Server = file:///home/custompkgs

Then run:

sudo pacman -Syyuu

This should synchronise your system with Manjaro’s Stable repository. If you encounter any errors, post the entire output of the command here.

Once your system has returned to being a Manjaro-only system and your system is fully synced, your should then be able to install pacman-mirrors.

This worked.
I just need to clean some packages but in the end everything was installed and now I have

mhwd-kernel --listinstalled
Currently running: 7.0.3-arch1-2 (linux70)
The following kernels are installed in your system:
   * linux515
   * linux70

and I also have pacman-mirrors

Thank you very much !

That looks like an Arch kernel, so you should replace it with a Manjaro kernel. You might find it easiest to do this via the Manjaro Settings Manager GUI:

manjaro-settings-manager -m msm_kernel

Hopefully you won’t encounter any further issues tidying up your system. You can leave your mirrorlist as-is; the 2 Global mirrors are all you need. The Global CDN mirrors have multiple datacentres on every continent (except Antarctica), so they are very reliable.
