Cannot login to Manjaro, black screen and TTY1 but login fails every time

Hello,

I have trouble logging in. I get a black screen with login for TTY1 and tried several TTY’s but all login’s fail.
Also tried to do this: [HowTo] Resolve an unbootable Manjaro (black screen, login failed, cant boot, etc)
Shell is Gnome.
I hope you can help me…

I manjaro-chrooted through live-usb and did several checks:

I hope somebody is kind enough to help me with this issue, I am really stuck here
@stephane helped me before with some issues on old forum, maybe you?

5.8 is EOL.
Use 5.9 or 5.4 LTS instead.

Is there a Firmware update for your MoBo? If yes, please apply.

After you’ve done the above:

Can you login to text mode on TTY2? If yes, what does startx tell you?

Hello Fabby, thanks a lot for your reply.
I have tried also 5.9, as I have it on my disk.
TTY2 is not working, it is really weird because I use my root to login, but it says that my login credentials are wrong.
What I did now is use LiveCD to startup… Hope you will have some ideas

  • Print off this page so you have it handy when you perform this process as you won’t have access to the Internet. :innocent:
  • Reset the password for root:
    • Reboot to grub

    • Choose advanced options

    • press E on any fallback option

    • ensure you have rw and not ro on the boot command parameters

    • add init=/bin/bash to the end of the boot parameters (note the Space before the init)

    • Press F10 to boot

    • Execute:

      passwd

    • OK, you’ve changed the root password.

    • You now have to reset your user password too:

       passwd 3d0zer

    • execute:

       reboot

Voilà! Back up-and-running!

What probably happened is that you got a pamd.pacnew file, didn’t read the release documentation and just rebooted. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

To avoid this in the future, read the #announcements before performing an upgrade and pay better attention to the known issues!

Thanks a lot, but I dont know if that is the problem.
When I add the data and press f10 it reboots but I get the following:

Bash: Cannot set terminal process group (-1): Inappropriate ioctl for device.
Bash: no job control in this shell
[Manjaro /]#

I cannot type there. Keyboard seems not to work
Tried it two times

Also I didn’t reboot by myself when my system crashed and became unbootable… it just flashed off into black screen…

Same on 5.4???

If yes: out of ideas then…

:sob:

Got white smoke
I plugged my keyboard in another USB… so not USB2 but the USB3 and it works now… Updated my passwords and can login with TTY2

See picture
Hope you have some ideas

What I notice is that mhwd is not working.
I get by typing mhwd -> -bash: mhwd: command not found

I might have something. But I think it is more related to Xorg.
I found this error in my Xorg log.

xf86enableioports failed to set iopl for i/o (operation not permitted)

I googled about it but cannot find much recent threads
Maybe you have an idea and if it is something more for the graphics part of this forum, please move the topic.

Good news, I reinstalled Xorg and utils and rebooted into kernel 5.7 and it seems to work now!
Hope I used this link for the step by step guide

This kernel is EOL, be prepared that its support will end soon. Check for #announcements before updating.

Thanks a lot. I will use a different
