Cannot login into KDE Plasma post 10/10 stable updates

Hello all,

I updated to the latest stable (on 10/10), and the only thing that was broken was the flatpak issue. I updated again last night, and now I cannot login at all. I can see the login screen, I enter my password, but not desktop. It just hangs with the loading screen…

Both using wayland and X11. Both just hang forever… I am currently on running kde plasma from usb with manjaro-chroot’d to /. I’ve run pacman -Syyuu (as was suggested to get over a adwaita-icon-theme-legacy issue) and it reports nothing to do… I’ve also updated my mirrors and retried.

I see core dumps in kwin_wayland_wrapper (when I remove quiet from kernel reboot)…

journalctl -b -1 -p3 produces this.

Have you tried in System settings > Session > Desktop Session, to choose “Start with an empty session”?

I can’t get into the desktop. However, I tried modifying ksmserverrc to set restore session to “default”, and that didn’t do anything. (forgot the name of the key).

It looks like you need to try again.

You might be having trouble selecting all the text. In that case you can also enter the backspaces manually both before and after the text;

like this:

There must be exactly three (3) backticks before and after.

Unfortunately, I’m not seeing anything useful in the output. :man_shrugging:

Perhaps some system information (when you’re able to access a terminal) will be beneficial for others wishing to help;

I’ll drop this link here for you as it’s likely to be needed later; that is, if nobody has found another resolution:

It may even be more practical to reinstall using a freshly downloaded Manjaro Installer ISO. If /home is already on a separate partition, that will make it easier; and, don’t forget to configure swap during install.

Do you have a Timeshift snapshot?

Maybe rollback… do pacnew file merge, if you havent done it.

Remove AUR Foreign packages. Also post your system settings here.

Try switching to 6.6 LTS Kernel and change your desktop session to start with a empty session.

Then Create another snapshot (just in case) and update again, after you refreshed your mirrors.

You probably should configure some swap space at some point (or, when you reinstall; if you take that option).

With 8 GB of RAM, I’d suggest a 12 GB swap if you want to enable hibernation; or perhaps 6 GB without. You have none currently.

This is unlikely to be related to your issue.

Is there an easy way to uninstall and reinstall kde,wayland, sddm etc, from a live system booted from usb ? If that fails, I am going to just back up my home directory and then reinstall manjaro. Expensive lesson to ignore timeshift. :frowning:

I’m not sure if this adds anything to this discussion or not, but I’m experiencing something similar.

When on the SDDM login screen, I can enter my password, but nothing happens. The password entry field just disables itself as if checking for a valid password but won’t login into the desktop.

But!: This only happens on an external monitor. Since the update, the login screen is shown on both, my external monitor and the external monitor from my Laptop. If I enter the password on the internal monitor, I can successfully login.
