Hi all,
I’m trying to install VLC 4.0 (vlc-git) but I receive an error saying it breaks vlc-plugin-lua
What is the correct procedure for replacing VLC 3 with VLC 4?
I would suggest not installing the GIT version.
What’s the problem with VLC? Or are you just chasing the bleeding edge?
VLC 4.0 is a development version: not yet stable, so it could be unstable and some plugins may not work correctly.
If you REALLY want it, then you have to remove:
sudo pacman -R vlc-plugin-lua
You can go back later, removing the GIT and re-installing VLC and the plugins.
Probably that will not be enough. At least in my case, this package is installed through vlc-plugins-all and that one also needs to be uninstalled. For example:
sudo pacman -Rc vlc-plugin-lua
But that leaves a bunch of vlc plugin packages as orphans. Also I don’t know if the plugins will work with the new version, so probably better to uninstall all plugins:
sudo pacman -Rs vlc-plugins-all
This will also uninstall a bunch of packages that are installed for theses plugins and are not needed anymore. Possible it will uninstall vlc itself, but I’m not sure, as I don’t have it installed myself.
There is also more vlc plugins in the package vlc-plugins-base but some parts of KDE Plasma seem to need them.
Hi @Ben and @cfinnberg
Uninstalling vlc-plugin-lua using pacman removes also vlc, vlc-plugins-all and vlc-gui-qt
[mirto@bianco500 ~]$ sudo pacman -Rc vlc-plugin-lua
[sudo] password di mirto:

At this point pamac-manager allow me to install vlc-git and identifies all the orphaned plugins removing them
Thanks to all
BTW I don’t like the unstable bleeding edge in fact I’m using the stable Manjaro channel
But VLC 3 have some annoyances, al least for me and my configuration.
I need to use the internal equalizer to ear the actors voices: (believe me) the Italian voices track have a lower volume compared to the other voice tracks. So the soundtrack overhangs the actors voices unless you use an equalizer to exalt human voices frequencies
Also VLC 3 seems sensitive to something in the system (probably a web browser) and there are some glithces (only sometimes)
Due to the fact that VLC 4 is in Beta status by many years, I decided to give it a try.
In VLC 4 the audio is correct without using an equalizer.
I tried VLC 4 inside a virtual machine accessing the video file through NFS. The video file was converted to full HD using Handbrake. I reproduced in a 4K monitor with virtual machine in full screen and inside VLC in full screen.
In these horrible conditions the reproduction was fine (with only some hesitations)
Then I decided to test VLC4 on bare metal
UPDATE
From Dolphin, double clicking on an mp4 or webm file VLC 4 opens correctly
Instead double clicking on an mkv file crashes VLC. For these files I have to open VLC, then open the mkv media file and everything works as expected
But this is acceptable for an (old) beta software
Just a note that vlc-git provides the plugins within the package:

However, vlc (in Testing branch) has the plugins as optional dependencies requiring installation of the plugin packages:

Possibly, when vlc v4 hits the repos, Arch will separate the plugins from the package so they can be installed separately (if that is possible).
Thanks @scotty65
VLC 4 have some problems with some files (different files with the same extensions one opens correctly the other crashes vlc)
On bare metal there is no relefant difference in video play.
So I’m returning to VLC 3
__
UPDATE
Returning to VLC3 was solved with these commands (the trick was -dd )
sudo pacman -Rsn -dd vlc-git
sudo pacman -S vlc
sudo pacman -S vlc-plugins-all
Thanks
