Cannot install using GNOME Boxes [Solution Found]

Hello, I am trying to install Manjaro in GNOME Boxes. I ran into the problem that the Installer can find no partition to install onto.

Investigating further, in gparted, running in the guest VM, there is 25 GB available (the amount allocated in Boxes), with the first 5.5 GB taken up by the live image. But the disk is locked, and no changes can be made.

I searched and found this problem described elsewhere on this forum and on reddit but with no solutions listed.

For further context, the Host OS is Ubuntu 24.04, and it is the Snap version of GNOME Boxes.

EDIT: As the thread is closed on Sept 8, I am posting my replies here (Sept 13).

1. I created a thread on the github page for the snap of GNOME Boxes, in case the problem is with them. GNOME Boxes Snap can not install Manjaro · Issue #39 · ubuntu/gnome-boxes · GitHub
2. Since I’ve found references to this error “(There are no partitions to install on)” when trying to install Manjaro on reddit, and elsewhere on this forum, with no solutions, I am not convinced that this is not a problem with the Manjaro image or installer.
3. I specified that the file GNOME Boxes downloaded was called “plasma” with no file extension because the person before me asked what image I was using. I specified that the error says “There are no partitions to install on” because that is the exact verbage of the error, which was also a question asked of me.
4. I am unfamiliar with virtualization. However, if I am following the Manjaro documentation for how to install Manjaro in a VM, I expect it to work, or at least for the error messages and documentation to point in a helpful direction. Installation Guides - Manjaro

SOLUTION FOUND:

Use virt-manager instead, installed via .deb, and Manjaro installs smoothly in the VM, using the same image. GNOME Boxes is buggy, the snap version more so.

No idea how to fix it. I think gnome-boxes is pretty much a gui for qemu and libvirt. As an alternative you can try virt-manager. This is what i use but i have not tried manjaro. Although it seems to be a more generic problem, if you cannot write to the newly created disk (is it newly created?). Are you sure you are running gparted from the vm live image guest itself? Gparted started from the host will not work without additional steps. That is the only theory i have right now.

p.s. virt-manager has a peculiarity - it creates the disk images in the root so you have to start it with sudo by default. It can be cured if you add yourself to libvirt-qemu and libvirt groups and if you save the disk image in the home. But for testing purposes it does not really matter that much.

It’s not related. The ISO is mounted as a virtual disk, it is not part of the usable partition.

What ISO are you using? I create VMs in Boxes all the time with no issue.

In Boxes, I selected “Create new virtual machine” and then selected “Download OS”. From there, you can search “Manjaro” and are offered three selections: KDE, XFCE, or GNOME, all x86_64 (Live) images. I selected KDE and it downloaded something called “plasma” which is a 5.5 GB binary file. When loaded into Boxes, it boots the Live environment.

It’s an ISO, i.e. a byte-for-byte image of a read-only, bootable ISO filesystem as you would find on a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM. And it’s called Plasma because that is what the desktop environment created by KDE is now called.

Before version 4, it was called KDE (Kool Desktop Environment), as a pun on CDE (Common Desktop Environment), the then-standard Motif-based desktop environment on proprietary Unix systems. However, with the release of the 4th generation of the desktop environment, the KDE developers renamed it to Plasma, and indicated that the name KDE was now used to refer to the organization of developers behind this software.

The goal is to get Manjaro “installed” into the virtual machine.

The virtual machine monitor should see the ISO as a bootable image. However, I cannot tell you why it doesn’t, or if it does, why it fails to boot, because for that we’d need verbatim error messages.

What I will tell you is this, though… Virtual machine disk images should best not be stored on a btrfs host filesystem, due to btrfs being a copy-on-write filesystem and using sparse files. So if you’re going to install an operating system onto a virtual machine disk image, then this disk image should best be put on an ext4 host filesystem.

There are no error messages when booting the image. GNOME Boxes does seem to see the “plasma” binary file as bootable, because it does boot from it. Once you’re in Manjaro, if you run the installer, it displays the error message described above. Verbatim, the error message is,

“There are no partitions to install on.”

This time, there is this additional error,

“There is not enough drive space. At least 7.9 GiB is required”

This time, going into gparted in the guest OS shows that /dev/vda has only 5.15 GiB of space.

If I quit the VM and open the preferences for the VM, I see that the Resources have changed automatically from 2.0 GiB memory and 25 GiB storage (defaults I accepted) to 4.0 GiB Memory and 5.15 GiB storage. But if I click in the box to adjust storage, it jumps back up to 25.0 GiB. Boxes is weird.

Booting the VM back up, if I launch the installer, I again get the following error:

“There are no partitions to install on.”

Opening up gparted this time, I see now that /dev/vda is 25.00 GiB, with 5.15 GiB used. But the partition is locked and I am unable to make changes. There are no other devices visible in gparted.

My root file system (of the host computer) is ext4, not btrfs.

Please let me know if there are any more specific places I can look for logs or error messages that can help fix this problem.

There is a “troubleshooting” log in Boxes, which I initally ignored, because it stated that Manjaro failed to boot, when it had actually succeeded. This is what it says:

Observations:

2 GB RAM is way too low for plasma. I see you adjusted to 4. Not sure if it is enough.

I see you are running the vm through snap. Don’t have experience whith those, but it might also be a problem. It’s a container in a container situation.

In the qemu logs at the bottom i do not see a disk defined at all but i am not sure i understand that config (how this libvirt2-storage works)

Virtual machine disk images should best not be stored on a btrfs host filesystem, due to btrfs being a copy-on-write filesystem and using sparse files. So if you’re going to install an operating system onto a virtual machine disk image, then this disk image should best be put on an ext4 host filesystem.

From your comments it seems that you might be better served spending time learning about technologies and concepts before blindly attempting to create a virtual installation.

Again, the issue does not appear to be Manjaro related.
