Cannot get mic working on Gigabye TRX40 AORUS XTREME

I’ve tried both Line-In and Mic on the mobo and CLI AlsaMixer says nothing is muted. It even gives the option for AORUS Master Front / AORUS Master Main / HD-Audio Generic / HDA ATI HDMI. The only option that actually gives controls is the AORUS Master Main (using old monitor w/ no audio over HDMI so I guess that makes sense?).

Now I’m realizing that AORUS “Master” is not the motherboard that I have… But audio out to my headphones works just fine…

AlsaMixer also says nothing is muted. pavucontrol also says nothing is muted and it detects when I plug the mic into the mic jack or the line-in jack.

Just tried installing pavucontrol-qt, that doesn’t detect any activity so it’s going bye bye.

I’m trying to get mic to show activity anywhere… Telegram, Discord, OBS, OS’s EQ… Nothing.
Digital Stereo, Surround Sound configs…

The choice that makes most sense is the one that I started on, though I have tried others. Why is it calling it "Default USB Audio Analog Stereo… Why USB? PCIe lanes != chipset != USB… or something? shrugs

Please Help!

:+1: Welcome to Manjaro! :+1:

  1. Please read this:
    How to provide good information
and post some more information so we can see what’s really going on. Now we know the symptom of the disease, but we need some more probing to know where the origin lies…

  2. An inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width would be the minimum required information for us to be able to help you. (Personally Identifiable Information like serial numbers and MAC addresses will be filtered out by the above command)
Also, please copy-paste that output in-between 3 backticks ``` at the beginning and end of the code/text.

  3. Have you tried one of the LTS kernels already?

  4. The output of:

    pacmd dump

    would be helpful as well.

:+1:

First off, thank you for the assistance and apologies for my convoluted newbie methods. Lmao

I found this and it seems to be exactly what I need, but I’m struggling following along because I’ve never had to do a kernel patch before and there isn’t a “step by step” guide to follow along so I’m feeling very lost and dyslexic in this wall of text… (bugzilla . kernel . org/show_bug.cgi?id=206873) I’m also afraid to try any of the procedure because I don’t want to f it up… Maybe posting it here can help you help me?

I feel like I should redact UUID and username and all other personal identifiers… A search query gave results claiming that, “Apple says it’s safe” (rolls eyes). Apologies, if you actually NEED any of that information I’ll re-post.

Thanks again. What’s next!?

  1. If you’re up against a kernel bug, the only thing you can do is wait until it gets deployed downstream.
  2. I need to call in someone else as your sound rig is too complex for me so,
@nikgnomic I’m totally lost here: 4 sound cards and I don’t even know where to begin as I don’t understand where the AORUS comes from.

:sob:

Thank you, Fabby.

I’ve been posting this same issues on multiple other forums and not getting anything promising. Most users are telling me to go buy a sound card / external DAC… But, in all honesty I’d rather spend that money paying a linux pro to patch the kernel so me and the ~5 other people with this motherboard can have mic / S/PDIF… ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I crossed my finger and installed 5.14.rs1.d0711.ge73f0f0-1 kernel available on the Manjaro installation, hoping that it has the patch applied, NO DICE!

I’ve called in our resident sound expert. Please be patient as we’re running a 24/7/366 operation here…

There has only been a few previous posts on here about audio on TRX40 motherboards, but I do not recall any for a Gigabyte motherboard

There is an open bug report for this motherboard but only for an issue with digital optical output
206873 – No sound output via SPDIF (toslink) on AMD TRX4 motherboard (TRX40 AORUS XTREME) | bugzilla.kernel.org
users report no problem with analog audio playback

Onboard audio uses 2 audio codecs and a DAC

  • Realtek® ALC4050H codec+Realtek® ALC1220-VB codec (rear panel audio)
  • Realtek® ALC4050H codec+ESS SABRE9218 DAC (front panel audio)

and they are detected as 2 USB devices in ALSA

  • Aorus Master Main Audio
  • Aorus Master Front Headphone

The naming of these devices confirms that ALSA is using the custom use case manager (UCM) profiles to tie both devices together as one device in PulseAudio
Add initial support for Realtek ALC1220 TRX40 motherboards

PulseAudio data appears to be configured correctly to use the onboard audio capture alsa_input.usb-Generic_USB_Audio-00

Audio capture inputs are usually not enabled by default in ALSA
(to avoid feedback noise between microphone and speakers)

Only ALSA audio playback controls show muted [MM] or unmuted status [OO] in alsamixer
Audio capture controls show CAPTURE when activated, or --------- if audio capture is off
audio playback controls Line In and Mic audio will have a mute button, but they only mute audio monitoring of the inputs and have no effect on audio capture within system

Please post response to this command to show ALSA settings in text format

@Fabby
I think Aorus is just a Gigabyte name for some of their gaming motherboards, like Asus TUF Gaming

Yes, audio playback works just fine. The issues are the mic and spdif. I have no way of testing spdif unfortunately, but I am here hoping to diagnose the mic.

ALSA Data is showing that the rear Mic has audio capture turned on and audio level set just below 0.0dB

Simple mixer control 'Mic',0
  Front Left: Capture 46 [58%] [-0.38dB] [on]
  Front Right: Capture 46 [58%] [-0.38dB] [on]

but the Front Mic and Line audio levels are set to 0 and audio capture turned off

Simple mixer control 'Front Mic',0
  Front Left: Capture 0 [0%] [-17.62dB] [off]
  Front Right: Capture 0 [0%] [-17.62dB] [off]

Simple mixer control 'Line',0
  Front Left: Capture 0 [0%] [-17.62dB] [off]
  Front Right: Capture 0 [0%] [-17.62dB] [off]

I suggest you use this command to turn on audio capture for Line and set level to about 0.0dB

amixer --card=2 sset Line 47 cap

and this to turn on Front Mic and set the level with a slightly higher level for the microphone to be audible

amixer --card=2 sset Line 55 cap

Tried both amixer commands. No differences noticed.

In the bug report there is mention of the mic on rear and front not working.

There’s also a custom kernel named “for-linus” provided by Takashi Iwai for Linus Torvalds, it appears.

I’ve tried compiling this kernel for myself but have had many hiccups.

Thank you for your assistance. I look forward to other ideas you may have about any of this.
