Cannot connect to WIFI - Beelink mini pc

Hello everyone,

I’m new to Manjaro and relatively new to Linux. Have been using Ubuntu on a virtual machine on Mac previously.

I recently bought a Beelink Ser5 Max mini pc 32GB RAM 1TB SSD, and tried to set it up. It came with Windows 11 Pro pre installed and I was able to connect to my Wifi on the windows os.

I downloaded Manjaro (also tried Ubuntu and Pop os) on a bootable usb to do a clean install and I can’t seem to connect to wifi with any of these Linux distros. (ps I already deleted the windows) The WiFi option does not even exist. I’ve read so many forums where people were able to connect previously and then lost the connection, and followed the steps to no avail. I’ve never been able to connect to WiFi with the Linux distros yet. I also don’t see anything related to WIFI or WLAN in the BIOS.

I have Intel AX200 WIFI6, and since my Manjaro version is 6.16, I should have the driver needed. However, when I checked, it can sense my Intel AX200, but it says driver: N/A. I downloaded the driver, and obviously rebooted, but it still didn’t work. I enabled and disabled the secure boot and nothing worked either. It still says unclaimed network.

I’m at wits end! Please help!! Thank you!

Welcome to the Manjaro community @GypsyVO

My BeeLink SER 5 Max (AMD 5800H) has had no issues with WiFi in the 2 years since I installed Manjaro on it, so if your machine’s specifications are similar, you most likely shouldn’t need to add any special drivers.

Maybe Windows wasn’t properly shut down, and that has blocked Manjaro from accessing the WiFi? I haven’t used Windows in more than 20 years, so others here may be able to provide more advice on that aspect.

Some system info would be helpful. Please post the output of:

inxi -zv8

as per the pre-prepared instructions below:

Thanks for providing such detailed output.

These 2 parts of your reply I found to be most relevant:

I’m far from an expert when it comes to networking, but I did a bit of searching on the web and I do have the feeling that you may have to re-install Windows on your mini-PC (only temporarily though - just to fix this issue). It looks like my initial thought that Windows was not completely shut down may be correct.

I found a lengthy topic on the EndeavourOS forum which has the same type of card and same error code (-110), and it was solved by reinstalling Windows, opening an administrative powershell prompt, and typing powercfg /h off:

Some other posts/topics worth looking at too:

Edit: If you don’t have access to a Windows installer, I have sometimes seen members of this forum recommend using Hiren’s BootCD PE as a way to boot into a basic Windows installation. That may enable you to run the powercfg /h off command to disable hibernation in Windows. ventoy, which can be installed from the repos, is usually the recommended tool for creating bootable USB sticks.

My issue turned out to be the (old) Majaro linux-firmware package and the way that it was compressed. When I started using the (old) linux-firmware package directly from the Arch repository, my AX200 worked without manually copying my drivers to the firmware folder.

In any case, no more of all that with the new linux-firmware situation. linux-firmware-intel works with no shenanigans necessary.

I had seen that item about reinstalling Windows. I wiped Windows immediately and I wasn’t going to try that trick.

I use Ethernet 100 percent of the time, but I just want things to work :grinning:

I did that on all of my old PCs, but having WiFi on my mini-PC really has come in handy. I live 15 minute’s walk from Sydney’s CBD, but my apartment’s broadband Internet connection is only fibre-to-the-curb. It then goes from the street to my apartment via ~50 year old copper wires. I average 20+ Internet disconnections most days, and it sometimes takes up to half-an-hour for the modem to reconnect and achieve a stable connection. During those times, I just turn my cellphone into a hotspot, connect my mini-PC to it via WiFi, and browse the web on my PC using my phone’s 4G data instead.

@scotty65 i don’t know how to reinstall windows. i tried that and i entered grub rescue. can anyone help?

@jrichard326 i tried reinstalling the latest Manjaro linux-firmware package but it didnt work. the wifi thing is still not showing. any other ideas?

thanks!

linux-firmware-intel should be installed on your system if you did not modify by removing any of the firmware packages that you may have thought to be unnecessary. Contained in the compressed linux-firmware-intel.zst file are the files necessary to make the AX200 be recognized. Those files are:

iwlwifi-cc-a0-50.ucode.xz
iwlwifi-cc-a0-59.ucode.xz
iwlwifi-cc-a0-66.ucode.xz
iwlwifi-cc-a0-72.ucode.xz
iwlwifi-cc-a0-73.ucode.xz
iwlwifi-cc-a0-74.ucode.xz
iwlwifi-cc-a0-77.ucode.xz

When they load successfully it should look like this:

Beelink kernel: iwlwifi 0000:02:00.0: enabling device (0000 -> 0002)
Beelink kernel: iwlwifi 0000:02:00.0: Detected crf-id 0x3617, cnv-id 0x100530 wfpm id 0x80000000
Beelink kernel: iwlwifi 0000:02:00.0: PCI dev 2723/0084, rev=0x340, rfid=0x10a100
Beelink kernel: iwlwifi 0000:02:00.0: Detected Intel(R) Wi-Fi 6 AX200 160MHz
Beelink kernel: iwlwifi 0000:02:00.0: TLV_FW_FSEQ_VERSION: FSEQ Version: 89.3.35.37
Beelink kernel: iwlwifi 0000:02:00.0: loaded firmware version 77.864baa2e.0 cc-a0-77.ucode op_mode iwlmvm

Check in /usr/lib /firmware if those files are present. They should be , but if they are not, you could try pulling the linux-firmware-intel.zst file from /var/cache/pacman/pkg/ and extracting those files and copy over to /usr/lib/firmware and reboot

Hi @jrichard326, i checked what’s in the firmware directory, and those are in there.

Output of “cd usr/lib/firmware” and then “ls”:

However, I’m not sure how to load them?

Is Wi-Fi enabled in the network manager applet?

Try to load driver:

sudo modprobe iwlwifi

Hello @jrichard326 , i loaded that command, but nothing happened. I cant seem to find the network manager applet too?

I don’t have any additional ideas. I run xfce and the network manager applet is from that DE. I use Plasma only in VM and am not familiar enough to guide you.

If you want to try the Windows 11 route you can download the Windows 11.iso, create a USB with Ventoy, reinstall Windows and follow the directions contained in the EOS Forum link, post #52.

Windows .iso download (towards the middle of the page):
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows11

@jrichard326 Thank you! I’ll try that, but I’m away for work for a month now and did not bring my mini pc with me, so I’ll have to deal with that when I get back. Can i keep this post open or does it close automatically?

As long as no solution has been assigned, the thread will remain open. But even if it were to get closed — e.g. to cut off the usual #MeToo necro-bumpers and thread hijackers — then all you need to do is contact either a Moderator or a Community Assistant and ask them to reopen the thread.
