Cannot connect to wifi after installing kooha 2.2.3-1

I’m new to Manjaro and had no problems using it until I installed kooha 2.2.3-1 (community) with “Add/Remove Software” and rebooted. Now I cannot connect to the wifi anymore. I tried reinstalling linux-firmware-whence and linux-firmware-marvell as suggested in another post with sudo pacman -U ..., but it didn’t solve my problem. For most other topics they go above my understanding of linux and networks.

Could someone help me?

Here is the output when I run inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width

Hi @MrMountainer, and welcome!

This :point_down:

…shows your Wireless’ drivers are not loaded for some reason. So let’s see if we can see anything. Please provide the output of:

lsmod | grep --ignore-case wifi

and

ls /etc/modprobe.d/

as well as

ls /etc/modules-load.d

Hi, thank you for the quick answer!

Here are the outputs:

> lsmod | grep --ignore-case wifi

iwlwifi           454656  0
cfg80211         1081344  1  iwlwifi
> ls /etc/modprobe.d/

> ls /etc/modules-load.d
modules.conf

Hmmmm…try the following:

See if there are any errors if you try to modprobe it. Please run:

sudo modprobe --dry-run iwlwifi

And also:

cat /etc/modules-load.d/modules.conf

…and provide the output here.

Hm. This doesn’t seem to give me any output.

And /etc/modules-load.d/modules.conf is empty too.

That’s good. Now let’s try reloading the module:

  1. First remove it:
sudo modprobe --remove iwlwifi
  1. Let’s reload it:
sudo modprobe iwlwifi

Here’s to hoping!

Okay, I ran the commands. Should I see something now? Wifi still says “No connections available”.

Reboot your PC and see if it works.

If not, please provide the output of:

inxi --admin --verbosity=7 --filter --no-host --width

…again, please.

Still no luck and it looks like inxi is giving me the same output too:

Yes. Yes it does.

I don’t know what else to try, short of a different kernel, so let’s do that:

  1. Install the new kernel by running:
sudo mhwd --install linux61

Version 6.1 is either set to be the next LTS version, or already is an LTS version.

  1. Reboot into the new kernel. See if it helped.

Hm. And before I try that, is there any way to reverse the installation of kooha? I am guessing it changed some configuration files in the process or something like that?

You can uninstall kooha - but you cannot reverse everything

sudo pacman -Rns kooha

But I am not convinced kooha is reponsible for your dysfunctional wifi.

When you install a package then - usually - you sync your system as a whole.

The most effective would be to use the latest kernel 6.2 as it likely have the best support for your hardware.

linux61 is the latest LTS and linux62 is the latest stable kernel - the latter IMO is an incredibly good kernel - very fast on my system.

There is no way to reverse it, except restoring a backup. That is the nature of Manjaro and how it’s always been.

I have seen here that an issue was sorted in kernel 5.17 and above. So it might just help.

In any case, with Manjaro, you can have multiple kernels installed. I have 3:

$ mhwd-kernel --listinstalled
Currently running: 6.2.0-1-MANJARO (linux62)
The following kernels are installed in your system:
* linux515
* linux61
* linux62

…and the command I gave you doesn’t remove anything.

Thank you for your insights! I am currently trying to figure out how to install linux62 without an internet connection. For some reason also tethering with my phone is extremely slow, so sudo mhwd-kernel --install linux62 times out.

I downloaded the stable 6.2.8 from here: https://www.kernel.org/

Can I tell mhwd-kernel somehow to use that file for the installation?

Unfortunately that is the wrong way to go about it.

So, download this file: https://mirror.alpix.eu/manjaro/stable/core/x86_64/linux61-6.1.19-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst

Save it somewhere on your PC, let’s say your $HOME:

cd ~
wget https://mirror.alpix.eu/manjaro/stable/core/x86_64/linux61-6.1.19-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst

And install it from there:

cd ~
pacman -U linux61-6.1.19-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst

Then if all went well, reboot into it.

Hope this helps!

Just figured it out 10 seconds before you answered haha. So I installed it and rebooted. Now everything works again :slight_smile:

Thank you very much for the help!
