Cannot connect any 3.5 mm headphones

Hi there,

I have a HP laptop (model 14s-dq3xxx) that I cannot connect any 3.5 mm jack headphones to without the sound continuing to come through only the speakers (not the headphones). I’ve tried with two different sets (one Sony, one JBL) and both work fine with other devices.

I’m relatively new to Manjaro and any help would be appreciated!

Hello @someGnome

You get a “Dummy Output” when no Profile was chosen. Check pavucontrol under “Configuration”.

In addition to checking pavucontrol, I also suggest checking ALSA audio controls for headphone and speaker outputs

alsamixer --card=0

Auto-mute mode is usually enabled by default in ALSA, so when headphones are plugged in the speaker output should be muted and headphone output should be unmuted automatically

OK. So I should create a profile for the device?

Thanks in advance.

Hi there!

From the output, it does look like the headphones are auto-muted. ‘mm’ is listed in a box below an unfilled bar. Other items, such as the speaker, have a filled sound bar, with ‘00’ listed in the box below. Is there a command for use within ALSA that allows for auto-mute to be disabled?

Thanks in advance.

The mixer control to enable/disable Auto-Mute Mode should be visible at the end of the controls shown in alsamixer. But it can also be disabled with this command

amixer -c0 sset 'Auto-Mute Mode' Disabled
