Cannot boot heavier games anymore

Hey all!
still trying to tinker and figure out linux as a gaming OS.
been daily driving Manjaro with KDE Plasma for about a year and a half now, and I don’t ever want to go back to windows…
that all being said, have a recent big problem that I’m scratching my head on.

whenever I boot a game (from either of my drives), steam says its starting, or running, but nothing happens… in fact, the entire desktop environment does one of 2 things:

1- the system refuses to open any new windows, and commands such as “shut down” or “restart” from the Application Launcher (start menu equivalent) do absolutely nothing. if I have anything open before attempting a game start, I can use the programs just fine, and typing “sudo -reboot” into Konsole gives me a system notification and sound saying it’s preparing to shutdown, but nothing happens. computer requires hard reset with button.

2- the system does the first part of the first outcome, but quickly freezes and requires a hard reset.

I have tried different proton versions, reinstalling all versions of proton, reinstalling the games that cause it, switching kernal versions, running the “sudo cat /sys/kernel/debug/dri/1/amdgpu_gpu_recover” command, and a few other small things…

so far the 2 games that for sure cause it at RDR2, and Helldivers 2. a game that does NOT do this, is Peak.

I have a journalctl output of the events that are triggered by attempting to start the games, if anyone wants it.

Hi @lava1709, and welcome!

If you have it, give it. The more information the better. Also give the logs from the game that doesn’t trigger it.

That said, it sounds like a hardware issue. Specifically the GPU not getting the power it needs when it needs it. But maybe I’m wrong.

I upgraded to the 7900XT when I switched to manjaro all that time ago, and just directly swapped the existing wiring to the new gpu… I may need to run a second harness to feed both power ports

Hmm…can you go back to Steam library and see whether the game button is back to Play or Launching or Cancel?

Educated guess tells me the game is running, but whatever compatibility runtime you choose, including the default, fails to render the game correctly and instead is stuck trying to render. You can check ps or htop to see whatever is running as a child of steam and kill it to get desktop control back.

Sadly I don’t play those two games, and instead yes, I play Peak. So I cannot really help in this regard.

EDIT:
Reading the logs, the Steam engine crashes, uploads its crash dump (/tmp/dumps/assert_20250901232418_53.dmp, may still be there), followed by steamwebhelper (one that renders the Steam website inside Steam client) crash. Then you try to shutdown. So apart from the crash dump, nothing seems useful.

it hangs on either launching, or cancel. so according to steam, the game is “running”.

any attempts to kill anything related to steam, doesn’t seem to fix the problem. the majority of the time, the desktop environment eventually freezes, regardless of what happens after I attempt to run the problematic games

1.About Freezing, did you know there is REISUB function that we have for Linux?

That hard crashes could lead to file corruption. If you don’t have a Kernel Panic, with blinking Keyboard LED’s… the REISUB function should work.

2.You maybe can also try a Flatpak or AppImage game? If you don’t know one… i can recommend Beyond All Reason, its free to play and has good graphic’s.

3.Since you wrote “cannot boot heavier games” which are the unhavier games that works? Maybe it is DX11 or DX12 related?

That’s pretty much a requirement, you need to plug both power ports on the card. Most cards would not even boot if not all plugged in.

Maybe not all, but some does. My GTX960, for example, boots and works fine without the extra power to draw on. (Personal experience told me that.) However, it wouldn’t be so happy when trying to start a game…

On windows the NVIDIA driver would tell you about the power issue I think.
Old cards also didn’t have the same power requirement, and often you could be OK by using only one power connector.

This is not the case anymore especially on big cards like that.

Recommended power supply for AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT graphics card is minimum 750W or greater power supply with 12V output > 62A. Minimum recommended system power supply wattage is based on a PC configured with an AMD Ryzen 9 5900X processor plus typical power requirements of other system components. Your system requirements may differ. GD-223.

The 7900XT card draws over 300W by itself while gaming, compared to a 10 years old GTX960 which draws around 100W. So not all cards have the same requirement obviously but modern gaming GPU have high power requirement.

I should clarify: the PSU I’m using has harnesses that allow for daisy chaining. in other words, I was using a single harness for all 16 pins on the GPU.
adding a second harness (like I had originally intended, but completely forgot) has solved the problem entirely.
it was a power delivery issue

You may have upgraded the kernel recently. I’ve started getting this error on 6.12.44 and have to rollback to the previous one. There seem to be a bug in amdgpu driver.
